TAMPA BAY 4 TORONTO 2

Seventh place Tampa Bay (20-32 -15) handed first place Toronto a 4-2 loss that kept them from gaining ground on thier closest pursuer, Washington.

Relief pitcher Tom Smith's three socreless inning of work, along with four strikeouts, was the straw that stirred this drink for the LaFavres.

Toronto scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings on RBI singles by Jack Darr, in the second, and Joe Powell, in the third.

Tampa trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when they managed to chip into the Toronto advantage. Toronto starting pitcher, Rick Mack, walked Bill Carroll, the lead off batter. Andy Kellert sacrificed him to second with a bunt (3-4) and Mike Buzhardt singled in the run with two outs.

Toronto loaded the bases woith no one out in the 6th on singles by Fred Holt and Jack Darr and a walk to Dick Hooten, and were in position to put the game away when Tom Smith replaced Kellert (5IP 8H 2R/2ER 6BB/5SO).

Smith struck out pitcher Rick Mack who batted for hoimself and got Jim Knox to ground into an inning inning double play started by second basemanTommy Mercedes.

Tampa tied the game 2-2 in the 6th inning on consecutive one out doubles by Bruno Whillock and Kurt Pocoroba.

A two run homerun by Mel Jones (5th), off Mack (7th allowed in 80.2IP.) put Tampa in front 4-2.

Jack Oates protected the lead with a scoreless ninth inning for his 8th save.

Toronto dropped to 35-17, but still maintains a two game lead over Washington, who lost to Detroit.

The winning pitcher was Tom Smith (1-0) and Rick Mack (6-4) took the loss.

DETROIT 6 WASHINGTON 2

Another 20-32 team mirred deep in the basement (tied with Tampa 15 games behind the leaders) posed a problem for a contending team.

Detroit came out swinging in the first inning. Monte Ganley's single off Washington starting pitcher Larry Milne scored Steve Hinkle who doubled with two outs to put the visitores on the scoreboard 1-0.

Cy Billingsley retired the first eleven batters he faced before walking Stan Littlefield in the 3rd with two out. Billingsley issued a lead off walk to Tom Bergman in the 5th inning but escaped when Gene Pagan grounded into a double play (4-6-3).

In the top of the 6th inning Simmy Alvarez hit a three run homerun, for Detroit, off Milne (6th allowed in 91IP) to put Detroit in front 4-0.

Billingsley continued to be plagued by walks in the 6th inning when he gave out two free passes, but managed to escape with a strikeout of John Manuel and a ground out by Littlefield.

Detroit added a run in the 7th inning off Forrest Money. Huck Avis, Ken Hughes and Steve Pfyl had singles in the inning. Billingsley had a key sacrifice bunt.

Billingsley lost his no hitter in the 7th inning. Billingsley walked the lead off batter, Julio Kreuter. Kreuter was forced at second on a ground ball hit to third by Tom Bergman who beat the rap at first by half a step. Gene Pagan broke up the no-hitter with a single to center field. Bergman went to third base on the play and scored on an infield out by Effie Maxcy.

Both teams traded runs the rest of the way Detroit scored a run in the 8th on a Huck Alvis single and Washington scored in the same inning when Stan Littlefield singled and Julio Krueger tripled.

MINNESOTA 5 BOSTON 4

11 Innings

Minnesota finally played well in an extra inning game and improved to a still woeful 2-5 in extra innings, while Boston fell to 5-2.

After dropping the final game at home to end a seven game winning streak, the Minneosta Moonlighters began a very important six game road trip, in Boston, at Red Sox Park.

Mendy Hoey started for Boston and had trouble in the first inning. Minnesota sent seven batters to the plate in the inning and three scored, all with two outs.

Kevin Smith walked with two outs. Anthony Ribrant doubled and Smith scored from first base. Rick Beckert singled home Ribrant. Beckert stole second (his 4th) and scored on a single by Mike Straub. 3-0 Minnesota.

Scott Hernandez made the start for Minnesota and went 6.2 innings gave up seven hits and four runs, one of the runs was unearned. Hernandez walked four and had three strikeouts.

After giving up three in the top of the first, Boston scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Pike and Randy Johnson singled putting runners on first and third with no one out. Willis Brown popped out to third for the first out. Billy Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1

Walks were a major problem for Hernandez as he issued two in the first two innings and in the third inning gave up a three run homerun to Lance Decker to put Boston ahead 4-3

Hernandez walked the lead off batter Mike Smith in that inning but got Chris Fairy to ground into a double play. Then Cy Lassiter doubled to right field and Hernandez was taken out. Lefthander John Lee came in and struck out Lance Decker to end the inning.

Minnesota tied the game in the 6th inning. Mike Straub singled with one out off Hoey. Mac Webb doubled in the tying run with two outs.

Minnesota's bullpen consisting of John Lee (1.1),Jack Saurez (2.0 WP 3-1) and Jack Fitzke (1.0 Save #4) shutout the Bombers the rest of the way.

Minnesota scored in trhe top of the 11th. Mack Webb hit his second double of the game and pinch hitter Brad Ward batting for the pitcher, drove in the go-ahead run with a line drive single to left field.

Jack Fitzke came in for the save (#4) in the bottom of the inning.
