BOSTON 2 KANSAS CITY 1

Boston scored two runs on just three hits off Paul Ratliff (LP 0-3 6IP 2H 2R) and two relievers Emil Foulke and Sam Hersh. But that was good enought for a close shave 2-1 win because Fred Tufts (WP 7-4) gave up just one run on nine hits over seven and two thirds innings striking out nine and walking two.

All three hits were of the extra base variety. Ratliff retired the first seven Boston hitters before Billy Murphy doubled in the 3rd inning with one out. Ratliff was able to pitch out of trouble that inning.

He was not so lucky in the 4th when he allowed a solo homerun by Mike Pike (3rd in 156 at bats). It was the 6th allowed in 59 IP by Ratliff. The homer gave Boston a 1-0 lead.

A walk, a stolen base, and a throwing error on catcher Lou Novoa led to Boston's second run in the 5th inning.

Willis Brown, the lead off batter, walked. Billy Murphy forced him at seond (3-6). Murphy stole his first base of the season and went to third on Novoa's throwing error. Tufts helped his own cause with a RBI ground out.

A pair of doubles by Bobby Lammano and Jeff Wakefield accounted for Kansas City's only run in the 7th inning.
