MINNESOTA 6 TAMPA BAY 4

Minnesota went from sitting on top of the mountain after going 6-0 on their last road trip to pull within one game of first place, to the back seat of the outhouse after losing five in a row in a six game home stand against Kansas City and Tampa Bay.

Mike Patterson, (now 7-3) played the role of stopper almost perfectly by going eight innings allowing six hits and four runs, three earned, walking three and striking out seven.

Minnesota took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a infield single by Mike Straub and a two run homerun by Rick Beckert, his 7th and the q1th hit odd Tampa Bay starting pitcher Lance Arias in 77.2 innings this season.

Tampa Bay tied the game one inning later when Patterson walked Wayne Branson with no outs and gave up a blast to leftfield off the bat off Mel Jones, his 7th of the season, and the 11th hit off Patterson, in 104.2 innings this season.

Tampa added a run in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead on a two base fielding error by left fielder Kieth Jones and a run scoring single by Bud Roberts.

They added a run to that lead in the seventh when Patterson again put himself in trouble, this time by hitting the lead off batter Jamey Swigler, with a pitch. Mike McCauly and Tommy Mercedes both had singles to right field. to load the bases and Patterson walked Bud Roberts to force in a run. (4-2). Bill Carroll grounded out to Beckert (unassisted) at first base to end the inning.

It was minneoista's turn to put on va rally. in the eighth. Anthiny Ribrant got things started with his fifth homerun of the season, with no one on and one out off Tom Smith, the first homerun hit off Smith this season in 40.2 innings pitched. (Losing pitcher Smith's line (1-2); 1.2 innings pitched 2 hits 1 run (earned) one homerun allowed, and one strikeout).

Right hander Mike Whitby replaced Smith and did not retire any of the batters he faced. The first batter, Rick Beckert, reached on a two base fielding error on left fielder Jamey Swigler. Beckert then scored on a single by Goose Weeden and Weeden scored on a triple by pinch hitter George Gonzalez. Gonzalez in turn socred on a single by catcher Damon Carey.

That was it for the scoring. Jack Saurez came in to work the ninth inning. Saurez gave up a single to pinch hitter Bruno Willock then got a force out on Willock at second base (1-6), pop out to shortstop Ferrell Martini and the final out was a 1-3 comebacker to the mound that secured Saurez' 13th save.

Thewin left Minnesota 36-27 four gsmes out of first place. Toronto who has lost nine of ten (37-26) is one game behinf Washington who has broken even in their last ten. (40-23).
