Brooklyn 7 Colorado 4
10 Innings

Brooklyn is 4-1 now in extra innings and Colorado fell to 1-2.

Brooklyn has gotten its act together somewhat over its last ten games, going 7-3, with a modest two game winning streak. The Dodgers are tied for second after game one of this series with two other teams, Florida and New York at 12-20 six games off the torrid pace set by front running Atlanta, now 18-4 (.818%).

Brooklyn started twenty-eight year old right hander John Colliflower, a talented pitcher, off to a bad start this season (0-1 6.67 ERA). Colliflower gave the Dodgers six innings. The long ball hurt Colliflower in the early going, as Colorado hit three homeruns off him. The New Jersey native has given up six long balls this season in 29.1 innings.

The three homers gave Colorado an early 4-0 lead. Carl Bailey hit two solo homeruns, his second and third of the season. Both were solo shots. The first came with two outs in the first inning and the second with one out in the third inning.

Bob Gassaway hit his second of the season in the second inning with a man on.

Brooklyn made a game of it in the third inning when control problems by Colorado opened the door for the Dodgers. Brooklyn loaded the bases with two outs off Turk. Leo Fox doubled to start the inning. Jim Richmond walked with one out and Joe Scheneberg singled to fill the bases.

All three scored on a double off the centerfield wall by Mike Gross.

The game was scoreless over the next three and a half innings.

Bill Sisler (11th appearance 2-1 2.77) took over the Brooklyn pitching duties in the seventh and eight innings and kept the score as it was. Sisler allowed one hit and recorded one strikeout and that enabled the Dodgers to tie the game in the eighth inning.

Turk's control issues surfaced prominently in this inning as the thirty one year old left hander walked to first two Dodgers in the inning; Roy Johnson and Leo Fox. Jack Dorman as called out on a pitch he argued was outside. Turk then walked Jim Richmond to load the bases with one out.

Troy Anderson's single to center field scored Johnson but Colorado centerfielder Jim DeMaestri threw out Fox at the plate with a pin point one hop throw to catcher Joe Dobernic which kept the score tied 4-4.

Although Turk walked his fourth batter of the inning, Clint Elliot, he was able to wiggle off the hook by getting Gross to fly out to out to Vince Bronkey in deep leftfield.

The game moved into extra inning when neither scored in the ninth after Keith Swigert pitched a scoreless ninth for Brooklyn and Turk did as well for Colorado and he pitched on into the tenth inning where the eight walks he issued came back to haunt him.

Jack Dorman started the 10th with a single to left field. Turk walked Jim Richmond (third walked of the game for Richmond). bit Dorman was then caught stealing (missed sign) by catcher Joe Dobernic (2-5) Turk continued to issue free passes walking Anderson and Elliott to fill the bases.

That was the end for Turk (9.2IP 8H 8BB 6SO 7R/7ER). Colorado brought in their ace reliever Blake Kittle (12th appearance 0-0 0.96ERA).

Kittle walked Mike Gross to force home the go-ahead run (Richmond) and A two run single by catcher Pat Carey gave Brooklyn some breathing room … 7-4 Brooklyn.

Brooklyn's closer Kip Tomberlin, came in to finish the game (14th appearance 1-0 1.13 ERA). After allowing a lead off single to Lou Darling, Tomberlin struck out the next two batters and got pinch hitter Billy Lunte to ground out to Anderson at first base to end the game.

Tomberson earned his 6th save.
