Atlanta at Brooklyn Series

Post by basilrathbonejr »

The Atlanta Ironmen have had their way with the National League over the first month of the season by setting a blazing pace. They go into the final series of the month with a 20-5 record and a seven game lead over Brooklyn and New York, both 15-10. The two second place clubs have managed to slide past Colorado and Florida and they now have their sights set on catching the Ironmen.

To the people of Brooklyn there is nothing better than having nine or ten beers and the equal number of hot dogs while watching their beloved Dodgers perform at Ebbets Field.

The Dodgers began their biggest series of the season thus far by having a big first inning. After starting pitcher Dick Ford retired the Ironmen in order in the top of the first the Dodger offense jumped on Atlanta starting pitcher Ben Sutherland for two runs on three hits. After Leo Fox singled and was caught stealing, Mark Gross reached on a single to left field and scored on Jack Dorman's tape measure homerun to deep left field. It was Dorman's first of the season and only the second allowed by the Atlanta ace in 47.1 innings pitched.

Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Sutherland settled down and would not allow another hit over the six innings he pitched and allowed just one walk while striking out six.

Pete Glockson took over in the seventh and did not allow a hit over the final three innings striking out three an walking one.

Brooklyn starting pitcher Dick Ford shut out Atlanta over the first five innings on four hits. The Ironmen cut the Brooklyn lead in half in the sixth inning. Stan Semproch tripled with one out and scored on a perfectly place bunt single by Barry Russell.

Atlanta tied the game 2-2 in the seventh thanks to a lead off double to centerfield and scored when left fielder Tom Myers misplayed a flyball hit by Hilly Gochnauer.

Atlanta added two more runs in the eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead off Ford and relief pitcher Keith Swigert.

Ford walked Barry Roenicke. Roenicke advanced to second base on a ground out to second base by Semproch. Swigert replaced Ford with one out.

Barry Russell greeted Swigert with a run scoring triple that gave the first place Ironmen the lead 3-2.

A ground ball to second by Frank Conway got a second run home. to make the final score 4-2.
