Why have Manager Preferences?

My preferences specifically say not to use SPs out of the bullpen. In my last game, "Coach ABE" used not one but TWO of my starters in relief- one for 5 innings. Yes, it was an 18-inning game. But, perhaps if one reliever had not gone unused.....perhaps if "Long Relievers" were actually used as long men? Hope my next starter has nine innings in him.
