St. Louis Post-Dispatch SPORTS

Pittsburgh 16 Florida 7

The second place Pittsburgh Wolverines scored sixteen runs on seventeen hits to put an end to their four game slide and salvage one game of their series with Florida.

Starting pitcher George Buffington went the distance for the winners giving up seven runs on 15 hits walking three and striking out five. Buffington threw a lot of strikes with the big lead thus he surrendered four homers in the game upping his season's total of homers given up to seven. Buffington is 4-0 for the season.

John Stiner hit his first two homers of the season, Keith Champion hit is second, and Bill Aaron hit number sixth.

Ed Solomon hit two for Pittsburg, a two run homer in the second inning, had a run scoring single in the 4th and a three run homer in the 7th driving in a total of six runs.

St. Louis 5 Los Angeles 0

St Louis won their fourth straight sweeping the Dodgers in Dodger Stadium. behind a one hit shutout by Cardinal starting pitcher Willie Trotter (2-2). Trotter doubled his five walk total with ten strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Tom Terpko struck out eleven in seven and one-third innings allowed four runs and walked five.

The only Dodger hit came with one out in the seventh inning, a single by Frank Shea.

St Louis took the lead in the second inning on a two run double by Todd Matheny, added single runs in the 7th when Lou Conley scored on a wild pitch 3-0 St. Louis and two more in the eighth on a lead off double by Gene Fox and Mark Tresh's one out RBI single. Tresh had a stolen base and scored on a two base error by 3B Al Grundt.

Lou Conley scored two runs had three hits, a double and stole three stolen bases giving him 9 for the season (ranks second to Chicago Tillie Lampe's 10.)
