Cards win 5th straight..

St. Louis 12 Florida 6

The Cardinals have played their closest two rivals (Pittsburgh and Florida) in back to back series and won four straight over them, five straight overall.

St LouIs took out third place Florida 12-6 in the opening game of a three game set. Cardinals starting pitcher Ralph James went 7.2 innings gave up six hits and six runs (only three were earned) to get his second win in three decisions. The Cardinal bullpen (Stan Madden and Doc Dealy) got the final four outs allowing no hits striking out one.

Florida took the lead in the first inning before an out was recorded. James walked John Siner who stole second base and then scored on a single by Mike Sommers. James settled in and got the side out before there was any more damage.

The St Louis offense would get itself into gear and take the lead in the 3rd inning.

Lead off batter Lou Conley doubled. Brooks Marshall reached on an error by pitcher Armando Norton. Conley was not able to advance. Pitcher Ralph James bunt both runners up one base. Matheny's ground out to third got Conley in to score the tying run. Marshall went to second and scored on a two out single by Gene Fox.

2-1 St. Louis. Between inning St Louis manager Red Snodgrass was ejected for protesting to loudly that Norton was balking by not coming to a set position by the plate umpire Dusty Piper.

The Cardinals added on to their lead in the 4th inning.

Mark Tresh and Jake Barajas singled. James advanced the runners up one base with a bunt. Conley singled in Tresh and stole second. Ghelfi walked. Brooks Marshall doubled in two (Barajas and Conley) and Ghelfi tried to follow them home and was thrown out at the plate by Leftfielder John Siner.

6-1 St. Louis.

Two error helped the Cards add on three more in the 5th. Conley hit his second homerun driving in two runs.

Darryl Parrent hit a two run homerun for St. Louis in the 6th to close the score to 9-3.

Fox dded a two run double and Glen Schlesinger singled him in to give the Red Birds their 12 runs in a 12-6 Final

Pittsburgh score is in and the wolverines down the San Francisco Giants by a score of 3-1.

This one was all Giants as they stayed one game out matching the Cardinals win. Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

Ed Shannon reached on an infield single. Pitcher Kevin Frias bunted him to second and Jack Miller singled to right field to drive the run in. Melvin Plaskett kept things moving for the Wolverines by drawing a walk. Jerry Oglesby drove in the second run with a single to right field.

2-0 Wolverines.

Pittsburgh added on a run in the bottom of the 6th when Jerry Oglesby singled, stole second and was sent to the plate by Ed Solomon's RBI single.

3-0 Pittsburgh.

The Giants scored a run in the dying embers of their half of the 9th inning on a 6-4-3 double play. Joe Rodriquez then finished off San Francisco to pick up his 6th save.
