BOSTON 5 DETROIT 1
A key series for both teams as they now have identical record 23-20 record, just two games behind Chicago and one behind New York. Boston, began a very important six game road trip to Detroit and Toronto, at a time when the team has been its most consistent baseball of the season over its last twenty one games going 13-8.
Shortstop Jeff Young, rookie outfielder Pete Reichardt, and starting pitcher Russ North were the stars of this game for Boston.
Young hit his 4th homerun leading off the game and Reichardt, a rookie, hit the first of his career to allow Boston to jump in front 2-0 in the first ining.
After giving up the two homerun, Brian Ojeda, the staring pitcher for Deroit retired the next seven straight batter before he faced Young again in the 3rd innkng. Young lined a triple off the base of the left field wall this time and scored on Reichart's second straight hit of the game, a single, to put Boston up 3-0. Juan Robles grounded out to third baseman Dave Scott. Reichardt was running on the pitch and advanced to second base and advanced to third base on first baseman Chris Koch's infield single off the leaping pitcher, Ojeda's glove, that redirected it past shortstop Dan Green.Phil Shore's single to right field scrored Reichardt with the second run of the inning. 4-0 Boston.
It was 5-0 Boston after five innings. Young hit his second triple of the game (10 total bases!) with one out and Reighardt hit a ground ball to score him (3rd RBI of game and season for the rookie).
Deroit got its lone run of the game in the bottom of the 5th off North spoiling his shutout bid. Dave Scott singled to rightfield with no one out and stole second (10th). North walked Marty Bahr. Two on - no outs. Phil Scott made the key defensive play of the inning by robbing Randy Nash of a hit with a diving stop and threw him out. One out... Benny Gilkey flied out to Reichardt in rightfield. No advance by the runners.... Two outs. North could not get pinch hitter Ernie Costo, batting for the pitcher, out. Costo ruined the shutout with asingle just past a diving shortstop Jeff Young to score Scott. Billy Patton popped out to second baseman Jule Caldwell to end the inning.
Detroit mounted another threat in the 6th inning. The lead off batter Dan Green gronded a single up the middle. Bahr walked to put two on again with no outs. Gilkey hit into a force out on a tap down the third base line fielded by North who got the force out at second with Young covering. Herb Ketlow flied out to Reichardt for the secodn out and Dave Scott popped out to young in hort centerfield to end the inning.
Detroit went down in order in the 7th and 8th innings, but put their lead off batter on to start the ninth and warm up action began in the Boston bullpen which had been quite most of the gsame. North settled things down a bit by striking out Kretlow. Scott hit into a fielders choice (3-6) for the second out and Nash grounded out to third baseman Phil Shore to end the game.
