The American League race tightened up considerably after the results of games played on August 23rd.

Twenty six year old righthander Steve Wilson threw a complete hit complete game three hit shutout for Toronto. Wilson walked two and struck out walked two and struck out nine handing Chicago its second straight loss and fourth in its last five.

Lady Lawton hit a grand slam in the first inning, his 3rd homerun of the season, to give Wilson all the support he would need.

Joe herrera, Tim Terrell, and Randy Griffith all joined Lawton with two hits among the 14 hit attack for Toronto.

ANAHEIM 4 NEW YORK 3

New York's three game winning streak was snapped by Anaheim. Anaheim scored four runs on four runs on eight hits. The loss allowed Boston to move into a tie for second place with New York. Both teams have 24-20 records. Detroit's loss dropped them to 23-21, three games behind Chicago.

Matt Halla 0-4 on the season going into this start went 7.1 innings gave up six hits and three runs but had nine walks and seven strikeouts costing his pitch count to run up and he had two leave in the eighth inning with one out and two on. Tom Boyles got the final two outs in the inning.

Anaheim turned a double play to get out of trouble in the third inning.

Halla walked three batters in the 4th inning, Vangilder and Rath to start the inning. Cuthbert beat out a bunt to load the base with no one out. Van Augustine popped out for the first out. Rath walked to force in a run. Heath grounded into n inning ending double play the second in two innings for Anaheim getting Halla out of a big jam.

Anaheim went in front 3-1 in the 8th inning on a two-run homerun by Rusty Ford, his 5th and the 3rd given up in 24.2 innings by Fleming. Mark Smith replaced Fleming. Charley Sanberg flied out to centerfield. Smith walked Russ LaManna and Randy Aquino doubled driving in LaManna 4-1 Anaheim.

New York staged a last ditch rally in the bottom of the 8th

Halla walked three batters in the fourth inning which led to a New York run. He walked Vangilder and Rath with one out

Rath grounded out to third base.

New York went in front 1-0 on a bases loaded walk to Elmer Rath in the 4th innning.

Aneheim tied the score in the 7th inning. George Vinton doubled to left field of Nolan Cuthbart. Wes Fleming replaced Cuthbart. Vinton stole third base (2nd). Dario Ponce pooped out to shortstop. Ray Vukovich grounded to second. Vinton scored. Pitcher Matt Halla struck out.

Anaheim went in front 3-1 on a walk to Bob Ens and a two run homerun by Rusty Ford his 5th and the 3rd surrendered by Fleming in 24.2 innings.

New York staged its last rally in the 8th inning. Halla walked Del Vangiler for the time time in the game. Hal Roth singled to left field. That was all for Walla; 7.1IP 6 Hits sand 3 runs all earned with 9 walks and 7 strikeouts.

Tom Bowles replaced him. Carl Beckman pinch hit for pitcher Mark Smith and singled in Vangilder/ Vaance Augustine's droundball to third base scored Roth.

Elmer Rath struck out and that's how it ended … 3-2 Toronto.

BOSTON 8 DETROIT 5

Things have been breaking just right for Boston as they won game two of their series with the Tigers in Detroit 8-5 and moved into a second place tie with New York with a record of 24-20. Boston received a complete game perfomrance from starting pitcher Russ north in game one and righthander Randy Carr came with in one out of duplicating that in game two.

Carr, now 3-2 with a 4.38 ERA, went 8.2 innings gave up nine hits and five runs, walked three and struck out seven.

Carr had given up just one run on seven hits going into the ninth inning. He tried for the complete game, but ran out of gas just short of the finish line. Carr struck out Dave Carr to begin the ninth inning, then walked Ernie Costa. Randy Nash grounded into a fielder's choice at second... second baseman Hal Weitelman feeding shortstop Jeff Young for the second out, but Nash beat Young's relay throw to first base keeping the inning going. Ed Walker singled to centerfield, Nash advanced to thirdbase. Herb Kretlow pinch hit for pitcher Boyd Godby, and singled to left field. Billy Patten hit a homerun scoring Walker and Kretchlow in front of him to put up four runs for Detroit ....Ed Humphreys, a starter moved to the bullpen came in and struck out Dan Green to end the game.

Boston scored its runs early in the game and scored in four different innings.

2nd Inning; Chris Koch singled to begin the innng. Dan Mashore singled past first baseman Benny Gilkey. Jeff Young singled past shortstop Dan Green, scoring Koch. Mashore went to third base. Young was caught stealing (3rd). Phil Shore doubled to centerfield, driving in Mashore. Jim Halas flied out to left field and Carr grounded to third to end the inning.

2-0 Boston.

3rd Inning; Detroit pitcher Bombo Lahr started his own problems when he walked the first two batters in the inning. He walked both Andy Pearce and Tim Hosley. Juan Robles grounded deep in the hole at shortstop. Both runners advanced on the play. Robles protested the call at first base to no avail. Then Chris Koch unloaded on Lahr for a three run homerun, his 10th of the season. It was 5-0 after three innings.

5th Inning; Robles doubled to right field and stole third Catcher Ed Walker threw the ball into left field for an error. Robles scored on the error. 6-0 Boston.

Bottom of the 6th inning; Billy Patten, Dan Green and Matt Bahr had three consecutive singles for Detroit to make it 6-1

9th Inning; Pitcher Randy Carr led off with a single to right field. Second baseman Hal Weitelman was hit by a pitch. Hisley field to center. Juan Robles singled to load the bases and defensive replacement Pete Reichsardt finsihed off the Boston scoring with a single driving in Carr and Weitelman. Boyd Godby replaced Casper Helfond and struck out young to end the inning.

Boston will go for the sweep in game three.
