Montreal wins fourth straight

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Montreal 5 Philadelphia 3

Montreal returned home from a 3-3 road trip to host the 10-15, 7th place Philadelphia Knights, in a three game series at Expo Stadium. Montreal is 6-4 thus far on their home field this season and have now posted a season high four straight wins.

Manager Buck Witten told the press after the game, ''We are getting better, but as Earl Weaver said 'momentum is just as good as your next day's starting pitcher.' Our starting pitchers have done well but there is room for a big improvement down the line.''

Witten added ''Our scoring has been dependent on the big inning of late. That's fine as long as you put hits together, but we have to be able to manufacture more runs along the way as well.''

Philadelphia siezed an early lead in this one off Montreal starting pitcher Red Harrell. Harrell logged seven and two third innings and did not figure in the decision. Harrell gave up two runs on a one out walk to Don Funk and Joe Wakefield's second homer of the season.

Harrell allowed a total of six hits and two runs, struck out four and walked three.

Harrell departed with two outs in the eighth inning after allowing two two-out singles to Wakefield and Creighton Nieto. Earl Curry replaced Harrell and struck out John McTamany to quell the scoring threat.

Larry Thomas took the mound in the ninth for Montreal and allowed a run on two hits to put the Knights ahead 3-0.

Montreal has won four straight on the strength of key big scoring inning in each game. The Expos waited a little late in this one but managed to get the bats going in the bottom of the ninth inning for their most stirring come from behind vIctory this season.

Losing pitcher Tony Harrist was pounded around for five runs on five hits and did not retire a bat in the ninth inning.

The Expos opened the inning with three consecutive singles by Pete Thompson, Tom Schreiber, and Wally Bloomberg produced the first run and left runners on first and third.

Greg Akers singled in the second run of the inning (Schreiber) before Larry Toporcer hit a game winning three run homerun, his 3rd of the season to give Montreal a 5-3 victory. Toporcer homered in his second straight game extending his hitting streak to five games.
