Post by basilrathbonejr »

Montreal won its fourth straight game after a pair of losses to open the season to go 4-2 on their nine game home stand to begin the season and tied with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh for first place, something that Montreal endured all last season as well.

All Star right hander Floyd Diaz, was paired on the mound with Jeff Moorhead, 4-11 in 1951, after making the All Star team with a 8-7 record in 1950, went eight innings in this one allowing three runs on seven hits.

Diaz held New York to two runs on eight hits walked three and struck out five to even his record at 1-1.

Montreal took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the thrid inning off Jeff Moorhead when red hot Dick Reyes (14 for 25=.560) singled and camevaround to score in front of Wally Bloomberg who hit his first homerun of the season.

New York tied the game in the top of the eight off Diaz and both runs scored with two outs. Neal Malloy singled, stole second and scored on a triple by Bob Glynn. Glenn scored the tying run on a single by Doug Rijo.

Montreal came right back in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. 1951 MVP Greg Akers single stole second base and scored the winning run on a single by shortstop Joe Craig.

Montral turned things over to 23 year old right hander Earl Curry in the bottom of the ninth. Curry faced three men, struck out one, to pick up his second save this season.
