Montreal vs Milwaukee Moo Moos

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Montreal 4 Milwaukee 0

Montreal completed its nine game homestand to open the season with a 4-0 victory over the Moo Moos. The win enabled the Expos to take two out of three games in the series.

Milwaukee handed Red Harrell his second consecutive defeat, this one by a 6-2 score in game one.

Lefthander Lenny Gorsica improved to 2-0 with a 4-2 win in game two going eight innings allowing one run on three hits as rookie closer Earl Curry came on in the ninth for his third save this season.

The rubber game of the series featured under rated lefty Raymond Miller and righthander Edwin Ganzel who proved to be a tough customer despite giving up three homeruns that cost him dearly.

Ganzel went seven innings gave up four runs on seven hits walked three and struck out seven.

Miller logged 7.1 shutout innings scattering six hits and two walks while fanning seven.

Miller stared out very strong striking out the side in the first inning after Scott Williams blooped an opposite field double to lead off the game.

Miller issued one of his two walks in the game with one out in the second inning to Jim Haldeman then got Leo Fydrich to ground into the first of two inning ending double plays turned by the Expos infield.

Miller departed in the eighth inning leading 3-0 with one out after he surrendered two consecutive singles to the pitcher Ganzel and Scott Williams.

Brain Bichette got the call from the bullpen and did an outstanding job of keeping the score as it was by getting Scott Hogue to ground into a inning ending double play started by second baseman Larry Torporcer.

Bichette, was acquired from Milwaukee last season, along with catcher All Star catcher Steve Priest, for two time All Star catcher Jose Rusie, and minor league outfielder Tim Geiss. Notable also because the two catchers were traded back to their original teams at the beginning of this season.

Bichette stayed in to pitch a scoreless ninth inning as well to earn his first save of the season giving rookie Earl Curry the game off.

All of Montreal's runs came via a homerun ball. All three were hit off Ganzel.

Dick Reyes hit two in the game, his third and fourth of the season placing him second in the NL in homeruns. Reyes went four for four in the game raising his average to a league best .541. His four hits game him 20 hits for the season, tops in the league, and ten runs batted in from the lead off spot, also the NL high.

1951 MVP Greg Akers hit his first of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning to provide the fourth run in a 4-0 final.
