Joe Cronin League Baseball scores and summaries

Post by basilrathbonejr »

On the subject of trades, there were four made in the last three days, the 8th, 9th and 10th and Anaheim was involved in all of them. The Aardvarks traded third baseman with the Giants, sending
34 year old slugging third baseman Ryan ,batting .302 with five homers and 15 runs batted in, to San Francisco for 25 year old Buster Morris (.289 0 4). Anaheim got younger and better defense while the Giants got another good bat.

Anaheim dispatched starting pitcher Willie Quick (1-3 4.46), minor league lefty Ed Bowman and two high draft picks to Pittsburgh for starting pitcher Charlie Clarke (2-1 4.67) and 24 year old right handed prospect Lou Dressler.

In another separate deal with the Buccos, Anaheim picked up right hander Billy Caudill (0-0 3.92) for homerun hitting catcher Chet Moore (.210 6 15), veteran right hander Henry Medwick (1-1 1.59 3 saves) and minor league shortstop Ovidio Mora. Moore, thirty-five, has hit six homeruns in 100 at bat as a back up catcher this season.

St Louis took 24 year old right hander Greg Washington ( 2-2 11.72 ERA 3 saves) in exchange for thirty three year old shortstop Steve Hulvey. Anaheim plans to use Hulvey in a utility role possibly later this season but definitely next year.

A fairly good pennant race has developed in the Joe Cronin American League with just six games separating first place Toronto and last place Detroit. Toronto currently holds a one game advantage over two teams tied for second; New York and Anaheim.

Both the Aardvarks and G-men are on four game winning streaks. Boston has lost four straight.

After the dust settled from all the trades, Anaheim found itself lacking a starting pitcher since scheduled starter Willie Quick had cleared his locker and departed. Billy Caudill, picked up in one of the trades volunteered to make the start.

It was Caudill first start this season after eight relief appearances. The Aardvarks did not expect a complete game out of the thirty four year old right hander. Caudill gave them six acceptable innings allowing three runs on six hits walking three and striking out three. He wpould not figure in the decision in a game decided by two Chicago errors the let in two unearned runs and a three run 8th would overcome a three run 7th for Chicago and give the victory to the red hot Aardvarks.

Chicago got the game's first run off Caudill in the top of the 2nd inning.

Willie Naples singled to left field with out and stole second. Fritz Schullstrom tripled to easily score him.

Anaheim quickly got things back even with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Harry Benton drew a walk and Balvino Sember scored him with a double.

Anaheim jumped in front 2-1 in the bottom of the 5th inning.

Shortstop Jim LaPoint reached on a two base throwing error by third baseman Otis Foytack (second costly error for Foytack in the series). Caudill bunted LaPoint to third from where he scored on Charlie Fincher's slow roller to second.

Tommy Hochette replaced Caudill and this time Hochette had a bad outing giving up a three run homerun to pinch hitter John Slaughter that game Chicago a 4-2 lead.

Billy Whitt took over the pitching duties for Chicago with the intention of closing it out. Bad defense once again hurt Chicago. Ed Hammond reached on a misplayed fly ball to right field by Jorge Fregosi. Hammond stole third base. Sember's long fly to right center field scored him to make it close; 4-3 Chicago.

In the 8th Anaheim went ahead on a single by Tony Green and a two run bomb by Greg Coleman off Whitt. 6-4 Anaheim.

Hammond added another run to the final score for Anaheim with a homerun, his 3rd, off Bumpus Ortiz to make it 7-4 Aardvarks.
