Cincinnati versus first place Pittsburgh

Game one; @ Abner Doubleday Stadium.

Cincinnati has won ten of its last thirteen games and chopped four games off its deficit while moving up into third place in the standings. The Doubledays have surprised the high flying first place Pittsburgh Pirates and won the first two games of a three game set in Queen City.

Game one was a 2-1 triumph for the D'days in ten innings.

Bill Jones, now 8-3, went nine innings (plus) for Pittsburgh and allowed two runs on eight hits walked one and struck out seven.

Cincinnati used three pitchers. Oscar Flagstad went seven and a third innings. After getting the first out in the eighth inning Flagstad allowed a single to Howie Voisselle who stole second base. Flagstad was replaced by Max Bradley who got the final two outs of that inning but not before allowing a run scoring single to Scott Gardner which tied the game 1-1. Dan Ricketts pitched the final two innings striking out two batters.

Both runs off Bill Jones came off homerun. Cincinnati scored the game's first run in the fourth inning when Otis Sheldon hit a two out homerun on a two-two pitch. Then in the tenth Tom Kamp hit Jones' first pitch out of the park to win the game 2-1.

Game Two

Lilton ''Lil'' Rand won his third straight start (7-3) going eight innings in game two. Rand recorded ten strikeouts walked two and held the high flying Pirates, hitting a league best .270, to two runs on six hits.

Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Frank Schirich tripled and scored on a two out single to center field by Scott Gardner.

Cincinnati tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The same two hitters who did the damage in gasme one were back at it once again. Otis Sheldon was walked by Pittsburgh starting pitcher Bruce Stone, Sheldon stole second base and Tom Kamp singled hiom in.

In the bottom of the sixth Joe Hudson beat out an infield dribbler to third base. Bob Hudson followed with a line drive single to right field sending Joe Hudson to thrid base. Otis Sheldon's high bouncer to second baseman John McCreery was an out but it got the one home safely to increase the lead to 2-1

One inning later Guillermo Clement and Jim Calloway both singled to center field putting runners on the corners with no one out. Clement scored on a grounder to shortstop Al Robles by Elbie Lambert. (3-1) Joe Hudson's single scored Callaway to make the score 4-1.

In the ninth Ralph McClain (1B) and John McCreery (2b) added a run for Pittsburgh to make the final score 4-2.
