First place Washington wins fourth straight

First place Washington (18-10) posted their fourth straight win with a 6-2 triumph over Cleveland. The victory gave the Senators a two game lead over the Boston Hokies who were the victims of a 10-6 beat down by the New York Bankers.

Washington has scored six runs in each of their wins during the winning streak to outscore the opposition24 to 8.

Washington trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the eighth inning when they rallied for five runs on five hits and three walks while sending ten batters to the plate. Washington collected five of the eleven hits in the game in that inning and had the added benefit of three of their four walks issued to them.

Luke Watkins had two hits in the inning, drove in a run and scored a run. Watkins led off with a double off Cleveland starting pitcher Ken Hedgpeth who was then replaced after seven innings plus one batter (2 runs on 7 hits 1 walk and 4 strikeouts) by Tony Hegan.

Hegan walked the first batter he faced, Dave Pryor. One out later, Eric Adcock singled home Watkins with the tying run (2-2). Jamie Walter followed with another single sending Adcock to third base. Willie Glendon flied out for the second out, but the Senators were far from done scoring.

Jim Costello drew the second walk of the inning to load the bases, Catcher Adam Christian singled in two runs to put Washington in front 4-2.

Pinch hitter Ed Shinnick also walked to reload the bases. Watkins, the tenth batter of the inning for Washington singled home Costello with the fifth run of the inning, Christian was thrown out at the plate by Cleveland center fielder Ton Bladt.

The Miracle Man, 1950 Cy Young Award winner, Walt Collins, pitched a scoreless eight inning and was the winning pitcher.

Jess Baxter finished the game for Washington with a scoreless ninth inning. There was no save situation with 6-2 final.

Collins was 11-1 with a 1.35 ERA in 39 games. Collins pitched 40 innings gave up 36 hits and 7 runs/6earned run.

Jack White started fo Washington (7IP 8H 2R/2ER 1BB/4SO). White also contributed offensively with a sixth inning single and then scored the Senators first run on a RBI bunt single by Adcock.

Cleveland took a 2-1 lead into the late innings thanks to a two out RBI single by by Ed Stanley in the third innoing and a fifth inning single by Ralph Jacobson.
