Washington picked up a game on Minnesota with a hard fought one run victory over the New York Bankers. Washington improved to 29-17 four games ahead of second place Minnesota.

New York dropped to 23-23.

Washington's first place run has been fueled by their lusty road record that now stands at 18-6 (.750). The win at home improved their home record to 11-11.

Winning at home has become a top priority for the Senators.

Washington did all of its scoring in the first two inning off New York's starting pitcher Andres Lyons.

Washington starting pitcher Jack White starting pitcher Jack White got off to a strong start in the game getting the Bankers first two batters, Jim Martin and John Shicker on routine ground balls to shortstop Luke Watkins, and Danny Hall to foul out to catcher Scott Hamner.

The Senators struck for two runs in their half of the first inning on a one out single by Eddie Shinnick, a two base error by second baseman Danny Hall put runners on second and third. Danny Duffie singled in both runs with a two out single o center field.

Washington added their third run in the bottom of the second inning. Slumping center fielder Jamie Walter led off the inning with a walk. Walter advanced to second on a ground out to thirdbase by Hamner. White, the pitcher, struck out for the second out of the inning. Luke Watkins came through with a big two out run scoring sing;le to give the home side a 3-0 lead.

White ran into is first real trouble in the fourth inning. Danny Hall had an infield single and then stole second base. Jarrod Raudman struck out Al Antonelli, singled to left field scoring Hall to cut Washington's lead to 3-1.

White allowed another run in the seventh ining to make it a one run ball game. Al Antonelli doubled and stole third base with no one out. New York went to their bench for four consecutive pinch hitters. The first of the group, Birdie Proly, singled to left field. Eddie Shinnick kept New York from scoiring any further runs with a diving catch in right field.

White left with one out in the eighth when John Shocker singled with one out, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error charged to catcher Scott Hamner.

A closer gets the save for holsing the opposition in the ninth inning based on the score, but sometimes the ''real save'' comes earlier than that. In this case recently acquired Carlos Devlin came in with the tying run on third base and one out. Devin struck out both hitters he face, Danny Hall and Jarrod Raudman, to save the lead for his team.

Johnny Houser collected his 14th save by holding New York scoreless in the ninth. Houser walked Bert Clark with one out then struck out Birdie Proly with Clark on the move. Catcher Scott Hamner gunned the runner out to end the game.
Hamner had four assists in the game thanks to getting four of seven base stealers in the game.

Sumner threw out Antonelli twice and Jim Martin once.
