Washington won its second straight game against New York to secure the series win and maintain its four game lead over the Minnesota Vikings who demolished Toronto 11-4,

Frank Kelley had three of the 14 hits the Vikings had. Kelley had two doubles and drove in four runs.

Palmer Hall hit his 8th homerun and scored three of his teams runs.

In Washington, thirty year old right hander Gil Smith went eight strong innings to even his record at 4-4. Smith allowed two runs on four hits walked one and struck out seven.

Washington went above .500 at home (12-11) with one game remaining in this series.

Smith had little room for error as New York's starting pitcher Oscar Donnelly shut out Washington on four hits through the first six innings. Washington rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game 2-2. Danny Duffie tripled to lead off the inning. Keven Clemens, acquired from Arizona for Garry Dauss, singled him in to tie the game 1-1.

Clemens has quickly replaced Dauss as the Senators super utility player. Clemens has played four positions for Washington already, second base, third base, shortstop and left field, while hitting .391 for the Senators, 314 overall. Pinch hitter
Willie Glendon flied out to center field, Pinch hitter Luke Watkins, a hot batter of late, drew a big two out walk to keep the inning going. Catcher Scott Hamner singled in Clemens with the go ahead run.

Jim Martin's solo homerun (8th) off Smith with two outs in the 8th inning gave New York the lead 3-2.

That lead disappeared in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pinch hitter Wally Wilhelm singled. Howie Bedell walked Eric Adcock then struck out Dave Pryor and got Danny Duffie popped out to catcher. Clemens and Glendon had successive hits, with Glendon's driving in Wilhelm and Adcock to plate two insurance runs.

Despite allowing a hit and a walk, Johnny Houser got the job done again in the ninth for his 15th save of the season.
