Kevin Clemens starred both with the bat and in the field to lead Washington to its second straight victory ad get Washington off to a positive start on a three game series in Oakland. The Senators still have the best road record in the both leagues (20-8 .714). Atlanta 17-10 and Philadelphia (17-11)of the National League are second and third.

Clemens, acquired from Arizona for Garry Dauss, on August 16,walked in the first inning, and scored an unearned run on an error by Brady Moates.

Clemens singled with one out in the third and scored on Jorge Stewart's first homer for Washington and second of the season to put Washington ahead 3-0.

Rookie Pete Heims hit his second of the year in the fourth inning to extend Washington's lead to 4-0.

Oakland began its comeback in by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh on singles by Brady Moates, Bobby Conyers, a walk to Willie Ripulski and a run scoring single by Jeff Krawczyk.

The second run of the inning came in on a ground out by David Chambers.

Oakland tied the game 4-4 on a two run double by Ripulski off Ty Lowery.

Clemens made his final, and most important contribution in the top of the ninth inning when he homered of reliever Randy Sells (LP 0-2)TO PUT Washington back in front to stay 5-4.

Washington's closer took over in the bottom of the nointh inning. Houser surrendered a lead off single to Krawczyk, struck out Dwight Whitfield and then finished thigs off by getting Bernie Brouhard to ground into a game ending double play started by Clemens who finished the game with five assists and one putout. Clemens has played five positions since coming to the Senators (first base, second base, third base shortstop and leftfield.)
