Washington 4 Los Angeles 3

Post by basilrathbonejr »

Washington journeyed to the city of Angels for a three game series. The Los Angeles Traffic have been unstoppable this season and are on the verge of running away with the pennant. That served to make this an important series for not only the Senators, but all contenders.

Desiring a fast start in game one the Senators came out swinging against Traffic starting pitcher Charlie Beaz. The Senators did all their scoring in the first two innings.

Luke Watkins led off the game with his second homerun of the season to deep left field. It was the thrid hit off Baez in 40.2 innings pitched.

Jorge Stewart and Jessie Thompson followed with singles and Dave Pryor walked to load the bases with one out. Baez got the second out by striking out hot hitting Bill Washburn but was not able to get Pete Heim who doubled in Stewart and Thompson for a 3-0 lead.

Washington added a fourth run in the second. Pitcher Ty Lowery struck out to start the inning. Baez walked and stole second, and scored on a two out triple by Jessie Thompson.

Lowery went eight marvelous innings, gving up just one unearned run on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Lowery improved to 5-1. Baez took the loss and fell to 4-3.

The Washington infield provided superb defense for Lowry.

Shortstop Luke Watkins made a great play to rob Pinky McHenry of a single to end the fourth inning.

Dave Pryor, starting at third base, had four assists and started two double plays. The first came in the second inning with one out and Gary Wiggs on first base with a single. Pryor fielded a sharply hit ground ball off the bat of Dale Padden, and made an accuate throw to second baseman Pete Heim whose relay throw to first beat Padden by a step to end the inning.

Pitcher Ty Lowery's fielding error to start the fifth allowed Harry Meister to reach base. Meister stole second and scored Los Angeles first run on Gary Wiggs single. Padden came up with no one out, and once again hit the ball well, but to Pryor again and the converted second baseman was up to the task at third base, backhanding the baseball and making another double play starting throw to second baseman Heim. Chuck Scala then flied out to rightfielder Bill Washburn.

Lowery walked two in the sixth after striking out the first two batters, but got out of the inning by getting Meister to ground into an inning ending force out.

Lowery struck out three over the seventh and eighth then turned things over to closer Johnny Houser to take care of the ninth inning.

Houser issued a one out walk to ball to Pryor. Padden singled in McHenry to make it a one run game (4-3). Houser racked up his 10th save by getting Chuck Scala to fly out to Washburn in right to end the game.

Jessie Thompson was four for four in the game.

Final 4-3 Washington.
