Senators have first place LA's attention after sweep

Post by basilrathbonejr »

The Los Angeles Traffic have been the class of the league this season and still have the best record in both leagues after suffering their first sweep in a serIes this season.

The Traffic put together a nine game winning streak from July 14th until July 23rd but great starting pitching by Washington's starters did them in in the first two games and a clutch pinch hit single by a forgotten man, Wally Wilhelm, sealed the deal for Washington in the finale. Washington outscored LA 14-7 in the three games.

Certainly, the Traffic have their attention on the upstart Washingtonians.

Game three would be a fierce battle that would not be decided until the final pitch was thrown. Both teams scored four times in the first inning.

Los Angeles victimized Washington ace Ty Lowery for four runs on two hits and a pair of walks in the top of the first inning.

Lowery walked lead off batter Don Arntzen. Arntzen went to third on a single to right by Park Lear. Frank MacFayden struck out for the first out. Harry Meister singled in Arntzen, with the runner, Lear making it to third base. Lowery walked his second batter of the inning, Gary Wiggs to load the bases. Dale Padden singled in Lear and Miester to make it 3-0 LA and Pat McMahon drove a fly to right field that was deep enough to score Wiggs with the fourth LA run of the inning.

That comfortable lead would not last long. Charlie Baez gave it away in the bottom of the inning. Baez walked the Washington lead off batter, Luke Watkins, to start the inning. Jesse Thompson tripled, scoring on the play was Watkins. Kevin Clemens singled home Thompson. Pryor singled sending Clemens to third. Danny Duffie's single to left plated Clemens and Pryor to tie the game 4-4.

Los Angeles took a 5-4 lead in the 6th.

Wiggs walked, moved to second when Padden grounded sharply back to the mound with the runner on the move. McMahon came through with a hit to left scoring Wiggs.

Carlos Devlin replaced Lowery and struck out the first man he faced, Chuck Scala, but pitcher John Miller poked a soft single to right field scoring Wiggs to make it 5-4.

Washington took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning. Devlin surprised everyone but dropping a single over the infield into right field. Watkins forced him at second base. Thompson followed with another hit for him, a single to leftfield sending the runner to third base. He stole second base. Dave Pryor walked to load the bases and Duffie singled to left dring in Watkins. Washburn drew a bases loaded walk to force in another run and make the score 6-5 Washington.

THAT lead was short lived as well, as LA tied the game in the 6-6 in the top of the 8th inning off Jess Baxter, who blew te save chance. Scala singled to right. One out later Arntzen doubled driving in Scala to tie the game again. Park Lear reached on an infield single but Baxter struck out the final two batters; MacFayden and Miester to end the inning.

The game was tied once again but once again it did not remain that way for long. Walt ''Miracle Man'' Collins, back in the bullpen after a succesful start in his last outing, came in and got the Traffic out in the top of the ninth.

That set up a walk off situation in the bottom of the ninth for the Senators. Hamner walked to start things. Shinnick was hit by a pitch to put two men on and Wally Wilhem came on to pinch hit. Wilhelm, a forgotten man on the bench as the season has progress made a contribution that might get him back in the lineup some more, a game winning single to left field.

Collins got the win in relief.

Washington ended the series onlt three games out now.
