Washington won its six straight game 10-5 over the third place Minnesota Vikings behind right hander Gil Smith. Smith went all nine innings allowing ten hits and five runs, three came in the ninth inning as he labored to finish what he started. Smith, 5-3 4.67 ERA, walked five, and struck out eight.

Washington's Wally Wilhelm was a forgotten piece on the bench rusting away only a short time ago and now suddenly he has gone three for three as a pinch hitter with a homerun. Wilhelm is also seven of his last eleven with two homers over his last ten games. With the emergence of rookie John Hasselbacher, the bench of the Senators is suddenly more potent than ever, something that every contender needs badly.

In the 10-5 win, Washington had ten runs on seventeen hits while Minnsota had five runs on ten hits.

Washington broke through with two runs on two hits in the second inning on a double by catcher Scott Hamner that was followed by a homerun by red hot Wally Wilhelm, his third of the season.

In the third inning, the Senators took a bite out of Minnesota starting pitcher Jimmy Mateo for three runs on four hits. Rookie John Hasselbacher, who stole second baseand then scored on a double by Danny Duffie. Duffie came in on a single by second baseman Dave Pryor.

Mateo was replaced by Randy Meche.Meche struck out Scott Hamner as Pryor stole second base.Wally Wilhem stroked a run scoring single to make it 5-0.

Minnesota scored a run in the bottom of the thrid to break up the shutout. Steve Wertz lead off the inning with a double, ent to third on an infield ground out by pitcher Randy Meche and scored on Plmer Hale's two out single to right field.

Danny Duffie hit his fourth homerun in the top of the fifth for Washingtonthat increased the Senators lead to 6-1.

Roy Sierra's fourth of the season made it 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Washington took firm control of the game in the top of the sixth scoring three more runs to lead 9-2. Scott Hamner tripled. Wilhelm singled him in finishing Meche as Minnesota brought in Jimmy Martinez mmediately gave up a run scoring doubles to Jorge Stewart and Luke Watkins.

A triple by Kevin Clemens began the inning and an error on second baseman Ron Lavender made the score 10-2 and three runs by Minnesota in the ninth made the final score 10-5.
