Washington wins seventh straight

Washington right hander Art Stafford, fresh off the DL, went eight innings allowed two runs on seven hits walked four and struck out six before handing things over to closer Johnny Houser in the ninth. Houser earned his seventeenth save of the season although he did allow two hots and recorded one strikeout.

Ron Lavender hit his 9th homerun in the bottom of the second off Stafford. It was the eleventh round tripper hit off Stafford in 75 innings pitched. Minneosta 1-0.

Bill Washburn's fourth homer of the season with one man on base in the top of the fourth ining put Washington in front 2-1.

Minnesota tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth. Frank Kelly walked to start the inning. Dave Reilly reached on an error by Willie Glendon. Ron Lavender singled in Kelly. Stafford then struck out the next three batters.

In the top of the sixth ining hot hitting Wally Wilhelm struck again, hitting his fourth homerun in front of pinch hitter Adam Christian who hit his forst of the season. Christian is 11 for 25 .440 for the season.

Stafford followed Christian with a single and the pitcher scored on a pinch hit double by rookie Leo Dolan to give Washington a 5-2 lead.

And 5-2 was the final score.
