Washington 8 Seattle 7 in 10 Innings

Washington improved to 2-0 in extra inning games this season. Seattle dropped to 1-1 in this sea-saw affair in the nations capital before a sell-out crowd at Griffith Stadium.

Washington took an early 3-0 lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on Leon Bauman, two run homerun, his first of the season coming off Seattle starting pitcher Charlie Nieves, the sixth hit this season off Nieves in just sixteen innings pitched.

Bob Machado's run scoring single in the second inning boosted the lead to 3-0.

Washington starting pitcher Shane Lucachyk (0-2 9.60) could not hold the lead very long, allowing two runs in the top of the third inning on a run scoring single by Bob Callahan and a double to left field by Charlie Nieman to bring Seattle within one run, 3-2.

Chuck Bedgood's solo homerun (5th) tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning.

The homerun put Bedgood in a tie with Washington's Shane (Big Stick) Smallwood for the leadership in homeruns in the American League.

Seattle took a 6-3 lead in the top of the 5th inning on singles by Callahan and Augustine and a three run homerun by Chuck Neiman (3rd).

That was the end for Lucachyk and the man who replaced him on the mound was thirty eight year old jounrneyman pitcher Tommy Zoldak. Zoldak spent seventeen seasons wondering from coast to coast and down into Mexico for a couple of seasons where he picked up his outpitch, a devasting fork ball, to compliment his fastball and assortment of other breaking pitches, including an occasional knuckelball.

Zoldak was very impressive going five innings scattering two hits and one walkj while striking out seven.

Washington siezed upon this toe tie the gmae in the bottom of the fifth inning when Tony Lee's three run homerun got the Senators back even at 6-6.

Seattle's bullepn dod a good job as well throught the later innings. Tommy Enright went three sand two-thirds scoreless innings striking out three batters and Bob Biancalana pitched out of a jam of his onew making with two walks in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.

Both teams scored in the tenth inning.

Seattle took the lead in the top of the inning via an unearned run. Washington All Star second baseman Shane Smallwood committed a two base throwing error putting Charlie Neiman in socring position. John Henrich then delivered a run scoring single putting Seattle in front.
in the bootom of the inning Seattle sent closer Tony Yarnell to the mound seeking his fifth save of the young season. Instead Yarnell picked up his first blown save of the season. Yarnell now 0-1 allowed a single by Mark Meers, walked Andy McCament and Smallwood to fill the bases.

One out later pinch hitter Hal Brinker singled in the tying runs and Bob Machado, four for six in the game with a triple (1st) singled in his seocnd run. McCament socred the winning run on the play.
