Tony LaRussa NL Recaps for August 22, 1950

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

New York is once again in first place by themselves after the most recent Tony LaRussa League action. The Stuffgangs lead Milwaukee by one game and Pittsburgh by two after some great games that were played on this date all around the league.

Te Stuffgangs shutout Los Angeles 3-0. Red Lamabe, still undefeated at 6-0, went eight shutout innings allowing just two hits one walk and striking out four.

Lamabe allowed a lead off double to Roric Burrows in the second inning, then retired the next six consecutive batters before encontering his strongest test of the game n the 4th inning.

Lamabe walked Floyd Oldring, the first batter of the inning and Jim Kepshire beat out a slow roller past the mound to second baseman Marlan Vina who had no lay. Bujrris' grond ball to first baseman Brian hausmann advanced the runners to second and third. Oildring did ot challenge the A- arm of centerfielder Larry Lyons on a fly to medium center field. Jack Raudman, fresh off a five for five cycle game against Chicago, his a rocket shot over the third base bag that was flagged down by third baseman Marv Neilson, who threw out Raudman at first base by a half step.

Lamabe reired the next 12 in a row before giving wa to Lloyd Briley in the 9th. Allong the way Lamabe did get saome extraordinary defensive help from his infield. Nielson with his play on Raudman in the 4th and the New York infield twice robbed Dodger catcher Dan Garcia of a potential hit. Shortstop Gary Davis fleeced him in the third inning and second baseman Harlan Vina stiffed him in the 8th.

Briley did not have a smooth ninth and only a bonehead baerunning play by Skip Barkley saved him. Barkley doubled to start the ninth but tried to steal third base for some reason and was thrownout by New York catcher Johnny Harper. Briley walked two batters following that to make it more glaring before Burrows grounded into a force play to end the game.

New York scored its first run in the 5th inning on a double by Brian Hausmann and a one out single by Marv Neilson. In the 7th Marlan Vina walked, stole second base and scored run number two on Hausmann's one out single and Vina capped it off in the 8th with his 8th homerun off losing pitcher Al Listach (4-20.
