WhipperWills knock off New York 4-3

Chicago has represented last place well over their last sixteen games going 12-4. Their error total did increase as they made three errors, but New York did not score an unearned run among the three runs on seven hits they had off three Chicago pitchers.

Tommy Werth started for the Whips and went six innings giving up runs on three hits. Werth cut down on his walks allowing just one and struck out four. Ray Marsell pitched a scoreless seventh inning allowing two hits striking out one and Hyrim Castino picked up the win (1-3) when the WhipperWills rallied for the late win.

Chicago handed New York its third straight loss dropping them two games behind first place Milwaukee and a game behind second place Pittsburgh. Milwaukee has won three in a row and Pittsburgh is on a four game winning streak. Los Angeles, in fourth place, has a three game winning streak going as well.

New York played well early in this game taking a 3-1 lead over the first five innings.

After both teams failed to score in the first inning, New York took a 1-0 lead in the second. Toots Cheney singled to center field, then stole second base. Brian Hausmann's grounder to first base advanced Cheney to third with one out. Tommy Werth issued his lone free pass to Andy Gaillard, who stole second. Cheney scored from third on a sacrifice fly to right field by Henry Burk.

Werth worked through a difficult inning in the top of the third. Pitcher Johnny Brown grounded out to shortstop John Honeycutt. Honeycutt made a outstanding play in the hole and a strong thrw to forst to complete the play. Tony Lyons reached on a two base trowing error on third baseman Emmitt Brown. Gary Davis made the second out popping out to Honeycutt on the outfield grass behind shortstop. Toots cheney bounced back to Werth for the final out of the inning.

Brown struck out the side in the third inning sandwiched between singles by Werth and Handrahan.

New York added on a run in the 4th inning thanks to a single by Brian Hausmann, a stolen base and a throwing error on catcher Randy Gilbert that put Hausman on third base to score on Henry Burk's ground out. Werth recorded two strikeouts in the inning Gaillard, for the first out, and Johnny Harper, to end the inning. 2-0 New York.

Chicago scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth inning. McAllister reached on an error by the pitcher, Brown. Third baseman Emmitt Brown forced him at second, 6-4, but beat the throw to first base. Gilbert ground out to third baseman Henry Burk, Brown advanced to second base. Dooley Plesko drove in the run with a single to center field.

Gary Davis' two out homerun to deep leftfield made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth.

The bottom of the fifth was a bad inning for Chicago. Werth collected his second hit of the game followed by singles by Woodson and Handrahan, but Lyons (A- throwing arm) threw out Werth at the plate. Honeycutt grounded out to end the inning.

Ray Markell took over in the top of the seventh inning. Markell, making his 19th appearance, allowed a two out single to Brown and a double to center by Lyons. Brown was thrown out at the plate by Handrahan to end the inning and keep the score 3-1.

Handrahan led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to right field signaling the end for Brwon (7+ 8H 2R/1ER 2BB/5SO) replaced by Bob Campbell. After retiring Honeycutt on a pop up, Campbell alloed a run scoring single to McAllister scoring Handrahan narrowing the lead to 3-2.

Hyrim Castino took over the pitching duties in the top of the ninth for Chicago and put up a scoreless inning despite a one out double by Vina, escaping when pitcher Bob Campbell batted and grounded back to the pitcher.

Bottom of the ninth;

Giblert out 4-3 .. One out.
Presco single to right field.
Mike Townsend double to center field...RBI Presco scores the winning run.

The last place WhipperWills may not have the best recrod ... but those who are contenders should be wary.....be very ary indeed.
