Chicago 7 New York 3

Chicago now has the best record in the league since the ownership change; 14-6 and got its second sweep of the season. The first was of Pittsburgh on August 8 through August 10th.

In a game eerily similar to the first two, New York assumed an early lead and its bullpen imploded in the late going to allow Chicago to come from behind to win for the third straight game extending the New York losing streak to five games. The New York drop off has been the most severe in the league with the Stuffgang going just 6-14 in their last twenty games.

The top of the first in the finale saw New York score a run off Chicago starting pitcher Mark Heath on two hits. Larry Lyon singled and stole second base, something the Stuffgang did very successfully in the series. Walt Babcock's two out single put the run on the board. 1-0 NY.

New York's starter Paul Fiene allowed a lead off bunt single to Ed Woodson, then retired the next seven straight, before pitcher Mark Heath singled with one out in the 3rd inning. Mike Townsend had a one out single in the 4th and that was it for the Whips in the early going as Fiene dominated with a sharp breaking pitch and his change up.

Marv Neilson hit a solo homerun off Heath in the top of the 4th to extend New York's lead to 2-0.

Elmer Anderson on a four homerun in two games binge, hit number three in two games, his fifth of the season, to cut the NY lead to 2-1 in the 3rd inning.

No more scoring until the 6th when New York struck again. Andy Gaillard singled. Heath walked Neilson and Harper beat out an infield single to load the bases. Paul Feine grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. Gaillard scored on the play to make it 3-1, but the double play short circuited the inning.

The Chicago bullpen once again came through for the WhipperWills. Gonzola Medena pitched a scoreless 7th and Gene Burton a scoreless 8th.

The bottom of the 7th and 8th was yet again another pair of good innings for Chicago.

Honeycutt singled with one out. Pinch hitter Dooley Presco bounced out with Honeycutt safely on the move to second. Woodson's two out double plated the run. 3-2 New York.

The 8th saw the WhipperWills break open the game scoring five runs off Fiene, Bill Campbell and Hank Rapp.

Fiene began the inning by walking Townsend and Gilbert then departed. Campbell came in and gave up a game tying single to Emmitt Brown. (Townsend). Brown stole second base and scored on Anderson's second homerun, a three run shot, of the game making it 6-3.

Hank Rapp replaced Campbell and gave up a homerun to John Honeycutt to make the final scored 7-3.
