Seriously!

The National League pennant race is tightening up top to bottom as Pittsburgh and Milwaukee lose and win on the same da and the pack has been inching ever so closely with last place Chicago being nine games back of first and they should be garnering a bit of interest, especially by the team that has to play them.

The two first place clubs both lost. Milwaukee lost to Atlanta 5-2.

John Smoltz (5-4)pitched and hit Atlanta to this win. Smoltz outpitched Chuck Garland (4-2) going 6.2 innings on the mound allowing 8 hits and 2 runs walked 2 and struck out 5. Smoltz was three for three at the plate scored a run and drove in a run.Smoltz' first hit came in the 3rd inning when he single to tie the game 1-1.

The Braves scored two in the 5th inning to go ahead 2-1. Marcus Giles hit his 2nd homerun to account for the first run and Smoltz singled and scored the second on Lonnie Shelton's double.

WhipperWills 3 Brooklyn 1

Thirty year old Tim Beswick was cast off by the Cleveland Stumblers (DSA'd) on August 27th and picked up off waivers on August 27 by Chicago desperate for starting pitching. Beswick made his first start foir thevWhipperWills in this game and went eight innings, allowed just three hits and one run. he walked four and struck out six.

Beswick blamed the walks which all came fairly early on lack of command for not having pitched. He said, ''As the game went on I regain command of the fastball and felt much better. Towards the end I felt tired and made a mistake onthe hit to Cock in the 7th. Overall I feel like it was a good outing and I would like to build on it and be a part of this starting rotaion and a member of this team which is clicking on all cyllenders right now.''

The first hit off Beswick came with two outs in the first off the bat of Ramon Valdez and cost him a run because he walked Jim Costello with one out and Costello stole second base.

Stuart Skiffle (LP 4-5 8IP 8H 3R/3ER 4BB/5SO) did not start off well either. Brent Handrahan doubled to left field. Mike Townsend followed with a single to left field that scored Handrahan with the tying run. Townsend stole second and he scored on Johnny Honeycutt's groundball single to centerfield.

Ray Sierra, filling in for Ed Woodson, walked to start the 3rd. Handrahan grounded into a 4-6 force play. Handrahan stole second and scored on Townsend's double into right centerfield.

3-1 Chicago.

Both pitchers settled down to not allow any furth scoring. Hyrim Castino (28th appearance 1-3 5.84 ERA) took over in the 9th and closed out the game for his 4th save.

The win was the fifth straight for Chicago, now 20-30 and only three games behind montreal, Atlanta and Brooklyn, all 23-27.
