Tony LaRussa NL Recaps for August 31, 1950

Post by larrysiegfried20 »

Milwaukee and Pittsburgh, continue to struggle to win and for the time being remain tied for the top spot with 29-22 records.

Both lost again. Pittsburgh was soundly thrashed by suddenly resurgent New York 10-3. Milwaukee was also kicked around, they were shellacked by Atlanta 13-9.

New York is 28-23 and suddenly just one game behind the two struggling leader. Montreal edged Los Angeles 6-5

The Chicago WhipperWills may not exactly scare some of the contenders, but maybe they should at least expect to have a battle on their hands. Chicago is own a 17-6 tear and have a current six straight wins. Chicago is three games better than Pittsburgh and Milwaukee over that span.

The stated desire of escaping last place is becoming reachable as the WhipperWills now trail Brooklyn, based on their sweep of the Stepplechase, by just two games. Atlanta and Montreal are three games ahead of Chicago and within reach. Los Angeles is five games ahead and the Whips believe that if things keep going well thaey might overhaul the Dodgers.

CHICAGO 3 BROOKLYN 2

10 Innings

Chicago is now 3-3 in extra innings and Brooklyn 1-4.

Chicago has won six straight and has won 17 of their last 23 games.

Chicago debuted a starting pitcher for the second straight game. Al Holland, placed on waivers by the NL Chicago Black Bears on August 27 and picked up by the WhipperWills on August 31.

Holland, 36, may not be in the Whips long range plans, but he can sure help in the short run. Holland was 2-3 5.25 in eight starts for the Black Bears, somewhat better than many of the starters the Whips have trotted out there.

The game began under clear sunny skies with a capacity crowd of 40,000 on ''wear your bikini day'' at the park.

Holland allowed a run in the top of the first. Bill Hoak, not a fan favorite in Chicago, doubled to center field. Ramon Valdez, a problem thorughout this sereis singled him in. 1-0 Brooklyn.

This WhippeWills rallied to get back even in the bottom of the first. as they have done throughout the series. Al Woodson, who missed game two, grounded a single to center foield and stole second bas. Johnny Honeycutt drove hm in with a one out double to left centerfield. 1-1 after one.

Holland was stronger in the second inning striking out Messenger to start the inning. Jerry Mann guided a single to leftfield. Jim Anderson tapped out to catcher Randy Gilbert on an ''excuse me'' swing of an inside fastball and pitcher Jerry Christmas struck out on three pitches.

Randy Gilbert got the Whips going in the bottom of the second with a line drive single to left field, then he stole second base, his 9th steal of the season. Emmitt Brown moved him to third base with a ground ball to second base. Utility man Joe Enzman filling in at second base, hit a sacrifice-fly to center field to put Chicago ahead 2-1.

The score remained that way until Brooklyn tied the game 2-2 and ended Holland's chance of a win in his WhipperWill debut.

Holland went 6.2 innings allowed 6 hits and 1 run walked 2 and strck out 8. A good outing. Don Jones got the final out of the seventh by striking out Jordan Rivera and the first two outs in the eighth giving up one run on a walk to Jim Costello and two hits, singles by Earnshaw and Mike Anderson, which brought in the run.

Gonzalo Medena came in to get Joe Messenger to fly out to end the inning.

Medena went another full scoreless inning and Gene Burton walked one and struck out the side in the top of the 10th to set up the WhipperWills for another walk off hero.

This time it was John Honeycutt who won it with another homerun, his 8th.

The game was the final game of a six game homestand that Chicago went 6-0 on. As a result Chicago is now 15-15 at home and will now journey to Pittsburgh for three and Montreal for three and will look to better their 6-15 road record.
