September is here, the deciding month of the pennant race and things are getting a little more interesting by the day. The two teams tied for the lead in the National League suddenly can not buy a win (although that would be deeply frowned on by the league). Pittsburgh has lost three of their last four and have been outscored 36-18 in those games The only reason they are still where they are is Milwaukee is in an identical funk. More about Pittsburgh who was shutout by Chicago later.
Milwaukee was shutout 1-0 by the three Dodger pitchers. Pat Williams (2-7 5.70) went 7.1 of the best innings he has pitched this season allowing seven hits and striking out five. Williams turned thigs over to Earl Mole with one out in the and the tying run on second base (Todd Cole who singled and advanced on a ground out). First baseman Joe Holbert took a hit away from Vicente Maple and Jesus Oldham ground out to second baseman Jimmy Brown, to strand the runner.
Lum Nieves retired the Brewers in order in routine fashion in the 9th for his 15th save.

Brooklyn 4 New York 1
Padraig (''Don't call me Paddy'' Walsh went 8.1 innings 8 hits 1 run 1 walk 7 strikeouts for the win (5-2) to hand Red Lamabe his first loss (6-1) off the season. Lamabe lasted 6.2 inning gave up four runs on seven hits walked two and struck out four.
Walsh figured prominentlky in the scoring as well. Walsh singled in Jim Anderson, (single, stolen base went to third on E2 Johnny Harper)and then scoired on Gary Earnshaw's 3rd homerun of the season coming off Lamabe, the 7th allowed by Lamabe in 77.2 innings pitched this season.
The final Brooklyn rum came in the 7th inning on Bill Hoak's 9th homerun of the season.
The only New York run was scored in the 9th inning. Gary Davis grounded to shortstop, Bob Frapples, for the first out.
Marlan Vina doubled to right field and scored on Jerry Flavin's single past first baseman Gary Earnshaw and sent Walsh to the siddelines to watch.
Felix Madison came in. Madison got a great play behind him from cener fielder Jerry Mann who made a great over the shoulder runnung catch off the bat of Brian Hausmann that may very well have save the ballgame.
After that Andy Gaillard looped a soft single to left that allowed Flavin to speed around to third base. With the tying run at the plate and runners on first and third, Marv Nielsen (.329 9 33) grounded out to Frapple, the shortstop to end the game.

Chicago 2 Pittsburgh 0
Slumping Pittsburgh hosted red hot Chicago in Pittsburgh. Reporters asked Chicago manager Louis Johnson what had changed to suddenly ignite the once woeful dreadful and terrible WhipperWills. ''I believe very strongly that the sun came up in the west and the players started to play better.'' Manager Jake Taylor of Pittsburgh was told of Johnson's answer and asked the same question
as to why his club had suddenly slumped. He thought a moment and replied, ''Louie is correct. When his players started playing better and mine started playing worse and their manager suddenly got dumber than a rock.''
Different strokes for different folks.
One of the more recent improvements for the WhipperWills has been the starting pitching. Previously the bullpen was being taxed early and often to work log stretches and suddenly over the last three games starting pitchers Tim Beswick, Ed Holland and Randy McBride have put up some startling numbers. They combined for 22 innings pitched gave up 12 hits and just two earned run for a 0.81 ERA.
McBride was the starter in the opener against the Panthers in Pittsburgh. Left hander Walt Scott started for the Panthers.
Both pitchers were exceptionally strong over the first four innings.
Scott allowed only one hit and two walks, and two of those base runners were cut down attempting to steal by catcher Jody Iorg.
McBride had terrific stuff according to his catcher Randy Gilbert. McBride's fastball had the Panthers swinging and missing or popping it up. McBride allowed just one hit as well, a two out single in the second inning by Iorg. He recorded four strikeouts, four pop up on the infield and two ground out and two routine fly outs to centerfielder Brent Handrahan.
Scott's only bad inning was the fifth inning. Scott got behind in the count to Randy Gilbert and had to throw a fastball which Gilbert hit out for his 3rd homerun of the season. It was the 12th allowed by Scott in 60 innings pitched.
Elmer Anderson, ambushed Scott on the first pitch following the homerun and doubled off the left field wall. Emmitt Brown popped out to third baseman Jeff Boyd in foul territory after a long run. McBride hit a fly ball to right fielder Dixie Donavon who dropped it for a two base error and Anderson scored the second Chicago run.
2-0 Chicago.
Neither team did much offensively the rest of the way
Chicago left five runners on base. Gilbert doubled with one out in the 7th and was left on. The WhipperWills left two on in the 8th. Handrahan and Honeycutt singled with two outs. Harry Nieson came in to get Townsend to ground out to Boyd at third. In the 9th Chicago left two more. Gilbert (third hit) a one out single and a two out single by Brwon were wasted.
McBride continued to hold the Panthers at bay. Ed Barr singled to start the 5th, and Iorg singled to right, but Barr was thrown out at third by Anderson. Iorg was then caught stealing by Gilbert.
McBride struck out the side in the 6th. Townsend robbed Donovan of a hit to start the 7th. Barr walked but was erased in a double play started by Honeycutt. (6-4-3)
Hyrim Casino pitched the 9th inning and earned a save, his 5th. Castino allowed a single by Juan Knowles, struck out Boyd and Dutch Fewster, who injured a rib cage muscle on his swing and will be out for approximately two weeks according to the Pittsburgh medical staff.
