The day began with two teams tied for the NL and for the first time in over a week there would be one team at the top at the end of the day.

Chicago is now 4-4 in extra innings...Pittsburgh still has the best record in both leagues in extra innings fell to 9-2.

The starting pitchers in this game both did well but neither figured in the decision. Bob Edelen of Chicago went seven innings allowed six hits and two runs walked two and struck out four. Edie Wisterzil went further going eight inning gave up three hits and no runs walked five and had eleven strikeout.

Pittsburgh scored twice in the bottom of the first. Greg Newfield doubled to right field with two outs. Jody Iorg singled in Newfield. Iorg stole econd base and Ed Barr singled to centerfield driving in Iorg. 2-0 Chicago.

Neither scored again until the ninth inning.

Jerry Walton took over for Wisterzil who left with a three hit shutout needing three outs for the win and a series win for his team. Walton blew the save. After stiking out Elmer Anderson to start the inning, the roof fell in on the Pitsburgh reliever.

Emiit Brwon's 5th homerun broke up the shutout...2-1 Pittsburgh.
