American League

Minnesota downed Oakland 6-3. Hy Brock (8-2 2,88) outpitched Bob Smith (6-2 2.38). Steve Grief came in to garner his 15th save and Frank Ray it his 11th homerun for the winners.

Seattle defeated Boston 6-4. Scottie Williams (2-1) got the win in relief. Vince Barnett 95) and Scott Stromatt (7) added homeruns for Seattle among the 13 hit attack.

Tampa Bay took out Toronto 5-1. Bill Dygert had three hits including hid 5th homerun and three RBI.

All of these developments left Minnesota, Oakland and Boston tied for the top spot with 32-23 records and Tampa Bay (31-24)just one game behind.

In the Senior Circuit the deadlock at the top has been broken as Milwaukee has moved two games in front of Pitsburgh.


BREWERS 6 NEW YORK 2

The Brew Crew has won two straight to asure themselves sole possession of first place.

Milwaukee scored two unearned runs in the first inning thanks to a Ron Flavin error that allowed Mike Tabor (single) and Stan Jimenez (double) to score.

Glenn Carr hit his league leading 15th homerun with the bases loaded in the 3rd to extend the lead to 6-0 off John Brown, the losing pitcher (7-3).

Chuck Garland went 6.2 innings six hits two runs no earned runs two walks and one strikeout for the win (5-2)

ATLANTA 7 PITTSBURGH 1

John Smoltz went the distance and held Pittsburgh to seven hits and one run. The loss dropped the Panthers two games behind Milwaukee.

Atlanta took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on thefirst of two costly errors committed by Pittsburgh. Henry Aaron singled to centerfield. One out later Dale Murphy reached on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Shorty Boerner that put runners on second and third ith one out.

Pittsburgh starting pitcher Corey Mussill issed successive walks to Mark Texiera and Marcus Giles to force in the second run.

Lonnie Shelton hit his th homerun in the 5th, the 13th allowed by Mussill to extend the lead to 2-0.

Pittsburgh cut the lead in half with a run in the 7th inning. Ed Barr doubled to leftfield, Catcher George Gordon reached on an error by Marcus Giles and Johnny Lemon followed with a run scoring single.

Atlanta blew the doors off in the 8th inning scoring five runs on six hits singles by Lopez, and Murphy and a double by Texeira produced the first two runs. Giles singled home Texeira. Smoltz bunted Giles to second. Furcal singled in Texeira. A wild pitch moved the speedy Furcal into scoring p[osition, Shelton doubled driving him in and Jody Iorg singled in Shelton.


Smoltz finished the complete game but had to work hard in the 9th inning for it. Ed Barr led off the inning with a single. Gordon hit into a double play started by Giles (4-6-3). Lemon tripled with two outs but Smoltz got Boerner to fly out to Aaron in centerfield to end the game.

WhipperWills 7 Montreal 3

The WhipperWills have been a league best 20-7 since August 6, but as their manager Louis Johnson said, 'It takes a whole lot of wins to recover from 4 and 24.''

Chicago, bent on getting out of last place before the season ends finds themselves 24-31 at this point, winners of nine of their last ten, and two straight, but still two games behind Montreal, Atlanta and Brooklyn. "If we keep winning some of those teams are going to feel the heat and wake up one morning looking up at us.''

Tim Beswick, 1-4 with Cleveland in six starts, made his seocond start with Chicago since being acquired on August 27th. Beswick went seven and two-third innings in this appearance allowed six hits and three earned run. Beswick did not walk a batter and recorded six strikeouts ti improve to 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA with Chicago and 3-4 5.67 overall.

Gene Burton (24 appearances 3.67 ERA) took care of the finalfour outs.


Chicago scored seven runs on eight hits. The Whips took the lead in the second inning. Tom McAllister drew a one out free pass from Junior Schroll and stole his 4th base of the season. Schroll walked Glbert to put two on. and Elmer Anderson singled to left driving in McAllister.1-0 Chicago.

Montreal tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Singles by Irv Wise and J.T. Bradley and a rn scoring ground out by Nick Boyer did the damage.

Chicago had a big 3rd inning scoring four rins on three hits off Schroll who also walked two in the inning. Woodson started the rally with a one out singleand stole second (6). Schroll had control issued during the inning and walked both Ray Sierra and John Honeycutt to load the bases. Twnsend's single scored Woodson and kept the bases loaded.McAllister lofted a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield that scored Sierra. Anderson singled in Honeycutt and Townsend but Gilbert was trown out tring to go to third base by leftfielder J.T. Bradley.

5-1 Chicago.

Schroll departed after four innings (four hits five runs six walks and four strieouts...was the losing pitcher 5-4).

His replacement, Buster Wagner, allowed a run in the 5th on a walk to Honeycutt, who stole second (3), and was driven in by McAllister's single to right.

6-1 Chicago

Randy Gibson replaced Wagner in the 6th and gave up a run on two hits, a single by Emmitt Brwon and a double by Ed Woodson.

7-1 Chicago.

Nick Boyer's solo homer in the 7th cut the lead to 7-2. It was Boyer's 8th and the 6th surrendered by Beswick in 46 innings pitched.

Abrajham Manlove doubled ikn Doc montefusco in the 9th to make the final score 7-3.

For Montefusco, it was his 42nd run scored of the season ting hm for the lead in that category with New York's Marlan Vina.
