Pittsburgh 10 Milwaukee 5

Pittsburgh began a three game series at home against slumping Milwaukee who going into the game had dropped four straight to allow Pittsburgh to pull within one game of the Brewers.

Vicente Maple (328 (6th) 14 (2nd) 42 (5th) got Milwaukee off to a good start with his 14th homerun of the season off Walt Scott.

Pittsburgh came right back in their half of the first inning to tie the game 1-1 on a two base throwing error on shortstop Mike Tabor and a run scoring single by Jody Iorg.

Pittsburgh scored again in their half of the second inning. Shorty Boerner doubled to centerfield. Dan Hutchinson walked Jeff Boyd with two outs and Mike Loman singled in Boerner.

Jody Iorg's 8th homerun in the 5th off Hutchinson (8th allowed in 101.1 innings pitched) made it 3-1 Pittsburgh.

Milwauke tied the game 3-3 in the 6th on a two run double by Vicente Maple.

Pittsburgh socred four runs in the 6th and 3 more in the 7th to take complete command of the game. Winning pitcher Walt Scott singled in two runs with a bases loaded no out single off Hutchinson. Lemon (walk) and Boerner (double) scored on the play.Jeff Boyd, the next batter, tripled in Scott.

Jeff Somerlott replaced Hutchinson (5IP 10H 7R/6ER 2BB/4SO) and gave up an inherited run (Boyd) on a ground out to shortstop by Mike Loman.

John Perez pitched the seventh for Milwaukee. Ed Barr singled leading off. Perez walked George Gordon. Lemon hit into a 6-4 fielders choice eracing Gordon at second base. Barr advanced to third baseman Lemon to second. Boyd singled past third baseman Stan Jimenez scoring Lemon.

10-3 Pittsburgh going into the 9th inning. Milwaukee made a run at Pittsburgh fighting until the very last out.

Francisco Latham flied out to centerfielder Greg Newfield; one out. Glenn Carr singled to rightfield. Pedro Burkett popped out to second baseman Jeff Boyd; two out. Scott walked Milwaukee catcher Tommy Wolfe and pinch hitter Cliff Long, batting for pitcher Dennis Tomberlin {injured..out 17 days...elbow injury}, walked to load the bases. Mike Tabor singled driving in Carr and Wolfe. 10-5 Pittsburgh... Stan Jimenez walked to reload the bases and that was all for the exhausted Scott..jerry Walton came in to strikeout Maple with the basds loaded for his 8th save.

Scott 2-6 got the win. Scott went 1 for 3 at theplate scored 2 runs and drove in two runs and on the mound went 8.2 inning gave up 8 hits and 5 runs (all earned) walked 5 and struck out 3.

CHICAGO 6 LOS ANGELES 1

The Chicago WhipperWills are 26-35 seven games out of first place but still languishing in last place three games behind Brooklyn (29-32) despite being tied with Montreal (14-8) for the best record in the league since August 19th.

Ed Holland, one of two good pickups made by Chicago for the pitching staff along with Tim Beswick (2-1 2.91), started for the WhipperWills amd went 7 innings allowed five hits and no runs did not walk a batter and struck out 6.

Don Jones pitched the 8th and gave up the only Dodger run on a one out walk to Skip Bentley and a run scoring single by Jim Kepshire.

Tommy Werth pitched the 9thgave up one hit, walked one batter and struck out two.

Chicago had 6 runs on 10 hits and did not committ an error and the Dodgers were held to 1 run on 7 hits and made 2 errors that led to three unearned runs.

Chicago initiated the scoring in the 2nd inning scoring two runs on a one out single by Emmitt Brown. Anderson (single) and Gilbert (walk) scored on Brown's hit. 2-0 Chicago.

The WhipperWills made it 3-0 in the 3rd on Ed Woodson's single to centerfield and Brent Handrahan's double to leftfield.

4th inning; An error on leftfielder Matt Robertson, and a two out walk to Brown, by Pat Williams, led to Chicago's fourth run, when pitcher Ed Holland helped his own cause with a run scoring single....4-0 Chicago.

Randy Gilbert led off the 6th with a single off Pat Willaims that finished Williams after five innings, eight hits, four runs (three earned) four walks and four strikeouts). Earl ("The'' Mole came in to replace him. Gilbert was caught stealing. Mole walked Rick Bolton, Emmitt Brown reached on an error by thrid baseman Tom Prall. Bolton was thrown out at third base (1-5) on Holland's faulty bunt attempt. Brown advanced to second Holland to first.

Woodson walked to load the bases. Brent Handrahan singled to centerfield driving in Brown and Holland...6-0 Chicago.
