Milwaukee and Pittsburgh have been in first place or shared the lead for most of the season but as September has heated up, the Montreal has risen to the challenge winning nine straight games to overtake them and take first place by one game. Milwaukee and Pittsburgh share second place with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Much of the credit for Montreal's rise can be credited to good stating pitching. Their Starters have gone 8-0 during the winning streak. Peaches Roig 8-3 2.82, George Rodin 4-6 5.09, and Terrell Johnson are 2-0. Mark Kaiserling and Junior Schroll have one win and Jom Gonzalez has the only win out of the bullpen.

Montreal rolled to its ninth straight win with a 7-5 win over Pittsburgh in Montreal where they are now 17-14. Terrell Johnson picked up the win going seven innings giving up five runs (all earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Montreal scored one run in the first and third inning and Pittsburgh had two in the second in a double by Dixie Donohue and a single by Ed Barr.

Tied 2-2 to start the 4th inning, an error in right field by Donohue and a single by Ross Barnes plated a run putting Montreal ahead 3-2. Johnson sacrificed Barnes to second base and John Ramsey gave Montreal a 4-2 lead with a single to centerfield.

Pittsburgh made it 4-3 in the 6th. Dutch Fewster tripled and Greg Newfield singled the Dutchman in.

Dan Law issued his fourth and final walk to Stubby Johnson to start the 7th inning and gave up a triple to nick Boyer. Bob Kull replaced him and Boyer scored on a ground out to shortstop by Pete Kremmel. The score was 6-3 Montreal.

Pittsburgh made it 6-5 in the top of the 7th. Two pinch hitters came through for the Panthers. Pinch hitter Carl Zauchin (for shortstop Shorty Boerner) singled to centerfield. Pinch hitter Mike Loman (for Pitcher Bob Kull) tripled driving in Zauchin.

Jim Gonzalez replaced Terrell Johnson.

Jeff Boyd singled to right field driving in Loman from third base.

Montreal added a final run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Singles by pinch hitter Greg Alberts, batting for pitcher Jim Gonzalez, and Doc Montefusco and a ground out to shortstop by John Ramsey made it a two run lead 7-5 Montreal for Al Odom to protect in the 9th inning foir his 15th save.

Los Angeles 7 New York 6

Laurin Evans (5-2) went seven innings gave up eleven hits and four run walked one and struck out four foir the win. Earl ''The'' Mole got the final two outs of the ninth for his first save after Raoy Eiteljorge gave up a two run homerun to Henry Burk (4th).

Matt Robertson had va three run homerun, his 9th, in the Dodgers five run 7th. Pitcher Dan Garcia had a RBI triple and pitcher Laurin Evens a run scoring single in the inning.

Marlan Vina went four for four with two runs batting in and is now batting .356, 2nd in the leage behind Pittsburgh's Carl Zauchn's .365. Zauchin's teammate Brain Hausmann is third at .344.

Brooklyn 8 Braves 3

Stuart Skiffer 6-5 winning pitcher Pat Jarvis 1-6 losing pitcher.

Ramon Valdez his his 9th homerun in the 3rd offJarvis. ...Mike Anderson, two for four with two runs batted in hit a two run homerun off Jarvis in the first inning. Jarvis has allowed 11 in 43.1 innings.

Skiffle went innings allowed seven hits and three runs and struck out tewlve, getting Aaron, Lopez, Murphy, and Texeira all twice.

Chicago 8 Milwaukee 5

In Milwaukee

Mike Heath improved to 3-7 going six and two thirds innings giving up six hit and three run with one walk and four strickouts.

Tommy Werth continued his recent good work, werth gave up singles to Tabor and Jimenez but got slugger Vicente Maple to ground into a inning ending force out.

Gonzalo Medena gave up two hits and one run in the 8th. Brad Oliver doubled and Francisco Latham singled. Harry Morogiello walked with one out to load the bases. Tommy Wolfe lofted a flyball to centerfield for the only run of the inning. Pruitt bounced into a fielders choice to end the inning with Chicago in front 7-4.

Chicago scored two in the first. Handrahan drew a lead off walk to start the game off Ham Ehrhardt. Tom McAllister grounded a single up the middle. Mike Townsend drew the second walk of the inning to load the bases. Elmer Anderson grounded into a 3-6-3 double play...good play by first baseman Francisco Latham...a run scored on the play and Randy Gilbert's two out single made it 2-0 Chicago.

In the Chicago half of the 3rd inning the WhipperWills increased their lead to 5-1. Handrahan started the rally again, this time with a double that got down and ast leftgielder leftfielder Todd Cole.. McAllister flied out to centerfielder Vicente Maple. Mike Townsend singled to right field scoring Handrahan. Elmer Anderson tripled to deep rightfield driving in Townsend. Gilbert contributed another clutch two out single to score the final run of the inning to make the score 5-1 after three innings.

McAllister hit a two run hoimerun in the 5th off John Perez, his 5th and the 3rd allowed by Perez. Four straight walks in the 9th gave Chicago its final run. Roy Pruit walked Townsend, Andron, Wurmley and Presko to force in a run.
