Post by jacktoast »

Boston Beaneaters 2 Detroit Motown 1

The Boston Benaeaters opened won on Opening Day thanks to the superb efforts of their starting pitchers Jimmy Gebhardt's route going five hitter. Gebhardt gave up two runs (earned) walked one and recorded eight strikeouts.

Detroit starter Mickey Lolich matched zeros with Gebhardt for the first four innings before he fell apart on the fifth inning when eleven Boston batters came to the plate pounding out six hits and being given two walks, by Lolich and relief pitcher Jim Padden.

The key hit of the inning was a grand slam homerun by Boston third baseman Joe Curtright.

Curtright had five runs batted in in the game adding a run scoring single in the two run sixth for Boston that completed the scoring for the home team.

Game two

Detroit 13 Boston 3

Detroit came back with a vengence in game two putting up 13 runs on 20 hits off five shell shocked Boston pitchers.

Denny McLain went eight innings (4 hits 3 runs (all earned) four walks and eight strikeouts). Hank Greenberg drove in four runs for Detroit on three hits. Greenberg was one of four Detroit hitters with three hits in the game; Ty Cobb, Al Kalina, and Charlie Gehringer also had three hit games.

Game three

Boston 2 Detroit 1

A low scoring, well played 2-1 game, won by Boston, gave the Beaneaters the series win two games to one.

Both starting pitchers went eight innings and both had excellent games. Hal Newhouser absorbed a tough loss for Detroit allowing just two runs on five hits over his eight innings (two walks and four strikeouts).

The only two runs for Boston came in the first inning on a two run double by shortstop Jim Burke after Newhouser had walked both Jim Klobedanz and Hal Crompton with one out.

Al Kaline spoiled the shutout with a solo home run off reliever Norm Judge in the ninth. Judge held on for his first save.
