Catching up on Beaneater Baseball............
Boston won five of six games on their recent road trip that began with a sweep of Minnesota, but did not get off to a good start in Seattle. Joe Bell went seven and two-third innings to pick up his second win this season without a defeat, primarily on the strength of a thee run first inning off Boston starter Jack Miller, the losing pitcher (1-1).
After getting a now customary 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Hal Crompton homerun, Miller failed to hold it by walking Doug Dendero with one out. Dendero then scored on a runging double off the left field wall by Dennis (the Critter) Ritter and a long two run homerun by "Bakersfield Bob" Davis.
Seattle posted a 4-2 victory.
Boston turned things around on the next two games beginning with outstanding starting pitching. First Frank Rice went eight innings in game two for a 4-1 Boston win. Rice (1-0) allowe one run on five hits walked only one and struck out eight.
In game three Adrian Thompson (2-0) was even better, pitching a four hit complete game 6-2 win. Seattle collect only two runs on four hits off the six foot three inch 220 pound right hander from East St. Louis, Illinois. Thompson walked two and fanned eight lowered his ERA after two starts (16.2 innings) to 3.78.
As good as the starting pitching was the bullpen in his limited opportunities; 2.2 innnings allowed nothing... zero hits zero runs five strikeouts.
Boston backed Rice up with four runs on ten timely hits and Mart Ouccinelli made his best relief appearance of the year and maybe his career
Boston's dew first blood in the econd inning. Short stop Jim Burke singled and sccored on a double down the left field line by catcher Don Putnam. After Kling struck out reserve outfielder Snuffy Lowendowski doubled down the rightfield line driving in Putnam for a 2-0 Boston lead.
The Beaneaters began adding on runs after that. A Joe Curtright solo homerun (2nd) made it 3-0 in the thrid inning. Putnam doubled to right and was driven in by Lowendowski's second double of the game to make it 4-0 Boston.
Rice began the ninth inning with a three hit shutout and had not walked a batter. That unraveled quickly for he walked the lead off hitter Dennis (the Critter) Ritter and lost his shutout on arun scoring double by Bakersfield Bob Davis. His then was taken out, replace by abaoston's closer Marty Puccinelli.
Puccinelli uncorked a wild pitch while pitching to Vicente Curd allowing the runner Davis to advance to third base.
But that prompted Cuccinelli to draw a red line in the infield dirt so to speak as he came back to strikeout Curd as well as Dutch Holton for two important outs without giving up the run on base when he entered the game and then got the really big 27th out for his fourth save when Randy Perez bounced a one hopper to shortstop Jim Burke to end the game.

Boston 6 Seattle 2
Adrain Thompson's complete game effort in the finale made things simple for the offense to relax, pound out fourteen hits, run the bases aggressively, both on the base paths stealing two bases in six attempts off catcher Johnny Daughters, (Klobedanz and Lowendowski had stoeln bases...Bowman (twice), Crompton and Putnam were all caught stealing), as well as challenge the B+ arms in the outfield of left fielder Dennis Ritter and center fielder Doug Dendero, who threw out Burke to end the 6th innning.
Thompson established his dominance early by retiring the first nine consecutive batters before allowing two walks, one in the fourth with one out that did not hurt him, but the lead off walk he issued to start the sixth did. Herb Montgomery tripled to tie the game 1-1.
Boston's run came in the top of that fifth inning. Crompton began the frame by bouncing to third. Burke singled, Putnam drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out.Kling made the second out but Lewandowski (five hits and five runs batted in in the series) drove in the run with a two out hit (single to left).
Thompson struck out to end the inning.
Boston went back to work in the top of the fifth after Seattle tied it in the bottom of the fifth.
Klobedanz walked and stole second. Curtright had the first of four straight singles. Klobedanz challenged Ritter's arm (B+) and scored.
Boston was not done.
Crompton singled to center field and Curtright ran on Dendero's arm in center field (B+) to score the second run. Burke singled to left scoring Crompton with the third run of the inning all becasue of
aggresive base running. Burke was nailed at the plate on a single to left by Lowendowski. Dendero's throw was right on the money.
Boston added the final run in the seventh. Bowman tripled and tagged up and scored on a sacrifice fly to center fied by Klobedanz.
Seattle scored a meaningless run in the eighth that made the final score 6-2.

Boston 6 New York 2
@ Beaneaters Staduim Boston Mass.
Boston returned home to the freiendly confines of Beaneater Stadium to face the hated New Yok yankees and as you would expect a capacity crowd turned out in hopes of seeing Boston put a loss on the Yanks 4-5 record going into the series
After opening the seaon at home for six games, the Yanks dropped four of six games but rebounded to win their first two in Minnesota before suffering a 9-5 loss in game three of that series.
The Yankees have already played three extra inning games and are 2-1 in those contests.
Ty Miller, the Yankees starter and Boston Jimmy Gerhardt engaged in a tight pitching duel through eight innings before the game was decided in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Gerhardt (3-0) gave Boston its third staight outstanding performance by one of its starters with his second and the staff's third complete game the season. The streak of good pitching (2.25 ERA) has lowered the staff ERA to 3.44 for the season which ranks third in the league for the season.
Gerhardt retired the first five batters then pitched around a two out double in the second striking out two.
Gebhardt hit lead off batter Don Abrams in the third but made an outstnding play on rival pitcher Ty Miller's bunt attempt and got a big force out at second the got the next two batters on a strikeout out and a routine fly to center field.
After getting the side in order in the fourth, the Yankees mounted a scoring rally against him in the fifth inning.
Ed Stuper collected one of his two hits in the game, a one out single. He walked Don Abrams. Miller got his second bunt attempt of the game done successfully (retired 3-4) moving the runners to second and thrid with one out. The Yankees took a 2-0 lead when the next batter Frank Hendricks singled.
Gerhardt got out of the innning with no further scoring.
Gerhardt gave up only one hit over the next four innings (Stuper single in the seventh and a walk to Kendrick in the eighth) recording two of his eight strikeouts.
Boston scored its first run off Miller in the first inning when lead off batter Scott Bowman (.324.410OBP) doubled then went to third when Jim Klobedanz reached on an error by third baseman Hub Bovee.
Bowman tagged and scored the run on a sacrifice fly by Hal Crompton.
The Yank's starter TY Miller had the Beaneaters eating out of his hand over the next eight innings. Their only scoring threat over those innings came in the fifth inning Putnam doubled with one out and Miller walked Larry Kling. Lewandowski forced Kling at second base and then was thrown out attemting to steal second base.
The Beaneaters scored the tying run in the eighth inningwhen Crompton singled and scored from first on a double by Jim Burke to left field by challenging the A- throeeing arm of Ron Perez.
A web gem play by shortstop Jim Burke cut off any chance of a new York uprising in the eighth and New York went down meekly in the top of the ninth setting up an explosive Boston bottom of the ninth.
Miller struck out Curtright to start the ninth going to a full count and then throwing a fastball past the hot hitting Boston outfielder. Crompton then singled on a Miller fastball and stole second. That brought an end of the evening for Miller. Slaton, his replacement did not retire any of the three batters he faced. he walked Burke and then Putnam to load the bases for Larry Kling who blasted a grand slam to make the final score Boston 6 New York 2.
