Yankees win 15 inning thriller 9-5 to even

Yankees 9 Boston 5 (in 15 Innings)

It was a thriller until the home team lost. New York fans would still feel that would be true after both teams played hard for fifteen innings before settling the issue.

Boston scored a run on two hits in the first inning again. Boston has scored fregualrly in the first innin accounting for seven runs but the fifth inning is their best scoring inning with fourteen runs scored in that frame.

This scoring burst totaled one run on two hits of Greg Flinn. Ken Bowman, establishing himself as one of the best leadoff batters in the league, singled to right field and stole second base. Joe Curtright drove him in with one out with a single to center field.

The Yankees wasted no time in tying the game. In the top of the second Norm Terry singled to right field and Ron Perez reached on the first of three errors commited by Boston in this game, a two base throwing error by Mark Poulsen, putting runners on second and third.
Terry scored on a slow roller to shortstop by Ed Stuper. 1-1.

Boston ran itself out of an inning in the thrid with two caught stealings in the inning.

New York left two on in the fourth.

A two out rally by the visitors in the fifth inning put New York in front. The Yanks got two out singles from Bob Mauro and Terry Scott. Boston starter Jimmy Clarke walked the next two batters, Hub Bovee and Norm Terry, to force in a run. Yanks 2-1.

Boston seemingly righted their ship and took charge of the game in their half of the fifth. Mark Poulsen singeld to right to sart the inning. Pitcher Jimmy Clarke attempting to bunt beat it out for a single. Bowman singled (third hit of the game) in Poulsen to tie up the game 2-2.

Clark reached third. Bowman stole his second base of the game..runners now on second and thrid. But Lewandowsky grounded out to first with no advance by the runners. Curtright singled in both runners to make it 4-2 Boston.

Clarke was unable to hang on to the lead allowing three runs on two hits and two walks in the seventh. Perez had a two run single and Stuper drove in the third run with a two strike bunt single.

5-4 New York.

Andy Finnvold tied the game with his second homerun of the season in the eight inning.

New York did not score in their half of the ninth and sent Ray Flick to the mound in the bottom of the ninth. Flick walked Jim Klobedanz (his ten walks lead the league) and Jim Curtright with two outs

Larry Klings sent a single to center field fielded by Ed Stuper (A+ throwing arm) who threw out Klobedanz at the plate to keep the game tied and send it into extra innings.

Boston used five pitchers out of its bullpen for 6.2 innings giving up six hits two walks and five runs compared to the exemplary work turned in by five members of the Yankee bullpen; 9 innings pitched five hits zero runs one walk and ten strikeouts. Harry Floyd the fifth pitcher who worked four innings allowed two hits no runs with four strikeouts got the win.

Marty Puccinelli 0-1, the fourth of six pitchers use by Boston, took the loss.

In the 15th inning Abrams singled, Floyd sacrificed him to second. Kirby Kinney doubled to center putting New York in front.

Amos Alcala repalkced Puccinelli but was eneffective.

Maura singled driving in (Kinney), Terry Scott was hit by a pitch. Nub Bovee walked and Norm Terry reached on a two base throwing erroir by back up shortstop Harry Wyle (cut after the game) two runs cored for a 9-5 Yankee win.
