Boston wins exciting series with Yanks two games to one

The three game series between the visiting New York Yankees and the home standing Boston Beaneaters had a little bit of everything, a 15 inning thriller and two close games that featured good hitting, good pitching and good defense as well as the oppisite of that as well.

Boston took the rubber game of that series 5-4 in another hard fought battle with the New Yorkers that went down to the very last batter before being decided.

As a reminder the Beanies won game one 6-2 behind Jimmy Gerhardt sterling complete game performnce. The Yankees came back to battle fifteen innings for a victory in game two to set up a rubber game in game three.

The starting pitcher in game three of the series were right handers Terry Rosado and Jack Miller, for Boston. Neither figured in the decision.

Rosado went six innings, allowed ten hits and three runs (all earned), two walks and three strikeouts.

Miller also put in six innings of worrk allowed four runs on eight hits walked one and struck out four.

Miller got through the first inning unscathed because of two outstanding defensive plays by third baseman Joe Curtright on Kirby Kinney and second baseman Jim Klobedanz on a smash by Dan Abrams. Terry Scott bounced out to first baeman Larry Kling to end the inning.

Boston scored all the runs surrendered by Rosado over the first two innings.

In the bottom of the first inning Rosado walked lead-off batter Jim Klobedanz (12 walks lead the league), who stole second base (5th steal). Klobedanz then scored on Hal Crompton's single.

Boston scored two runs in the second inning on a double by Snuffy Lewandowski and a homerun by Andy Finnvold (3rd).

However, in this series early leads did not hold up very long. New York broke into the scoring column in the third when Kirby Kinney and Terry Scott both doubled. 2-1 Boston.

Lee Garoni hit a two run homerun in the fourth inning that tied the game 3-3.

One inning later the Yankees forged into the lead 4-3 on singles by Hub Bovee and Eppie Mazzilli.

In the bottom of the sixth Boston pinch hit for Miller but did not score.

The Beaneaters tied the game in the seventh on a single and stolen base (5th) by Joe Curtright and a run scoring single by Hal Crompton (.476).

Boston had its third runner in the series thrown out at the plate when right fiekder Don Abrams three out Larry Kling at the plate.

Hilton Bell took over for Miller and went two scoreless (7th and 8th) innings allowing one hit and striking out one.

Lyle Clay took over in the ninth pitching a scoreless inning and became the winning pitcher when Boston scored in the borrom of the ninth.

Pretzel Slaton who was hit hard in game one took over in the ninth for the Yankees. Danny Durning, a late inning defensive replacement singled and Slaton hit Curtrigh with a pitch. Jim Burke singled in Durning with the winning run.

Boston won the game 5-4 and the series two games to one.

Boston and Detroit ae tied for first place. Detroit, the hottest team in the league has won nine straight.

Boston opened a series with Baltimore in Baltimore who is 4-8 and in last place.

Baltimore took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning. Duane Boak singled to left field. Bill Santiago singled with one out advancing Boak to third base. Jeffrey Willaims doubled in Boak.

Boston tied the game in the top of the 5th inning. Andy Finnvold a pleasant surprise, tripled off Ossie Orndorff.

Wayne Lee replaced Orndorff (4 innings 3 hits 1run 1 walk 1 strikeout) Boston starting pitcher Adrian Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game 1-1.

Lee worked four scoreless giving up just two hits with three strikeouts.

Thompson (3-0) gave up just one run over his eight innings on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Ed Sasser was on the mound in the 9th of New York. Putnam singled and was replaced by pinch runner Snuffy Lewandoski. Lewandowski was throiwn out stealing. (2-4)

Larry Kling doubled and Finnvold singled in the winning run.
