Bucky Harris Baseball

National League champions St Louis may have been unable to solve the New York Hammers in either the 1950 or 1951 World Series, but they have had a stealy hand on the National League teams this year jumping out to a unbelievable 30-4 start. It was looking like they might win out the rest of the season until the Pittsburgh Ponies handed them two straight losses on the Stars home field to give the rest of the league a little hope.

The Ponies won 8-5 and 6-3 putting an end to an eleven game winning streak for the Stars.

Earlier the Stars put together a fifteen game winning streak ended by Montreal on July 25 when the defeated St Louis 9-2 in the third game of a series played in Montreal.

St. Louis, a team comprised of many superstars has been led on the mound by starting pitchers Kurt Caldwell (5-1 2.61), Jermaine Poepping (7-1 2.55), Paul Baldwin (4-0 2.57), Bill Cheney (5-2 1.99) and Bill Mitchell (3-1 3.41). The bullpen has mostly been a twosome of Jim McCarver (2-0 1.64 in 11 innings pitched) and closer Whitey Mohler (1-0 0.95 with 16 saves in 16 appearances.

Catcher Travis Pena (283 3 Hrs 16 RBI), 1B Hal Mickens (.279 5 Hrs 16 RBI), 2B Jesse Pyle (.357 5 Hrs 27 RBI),3B Bobby Lavalliere (.314 7 Hrs 23 RBI), SS Chris Jones (.345 3 23), CF Joe Putnam (.302 4 Hrs 20 RBI) and RF Wes Nagelson (.193 5 Hrs 5 21 RBI) have proved the Stars with a potent game by game offense.

The two losses combined with three straight wins by the second place Florida Stingrays which pulled the Rays to a still distant ten games of the Stars.

Florida swept New York at home winning game one 4-3 in ten innings.

Relief pitcher Jim Coffman (3-0) picked up the win with a scoreless 10th inning.

Florida's bullpen did yeoman like work in the entire series not allowing a run over the three game series.

Losing pitcher Jim Young (1-1) walked the first two batters of the tenth inning; Bill Keegan and Elmer Griesinger. With one out, second baseman Bill Barker booted Phillip Crowder's potential double play grounder to load the bases instead.Keegan then scored the winning run on a single by Fausto Gonzalez.

Crowder had a two run homerun in the three run Stingrays 7th and Danny Thurmond singled in the tying run to send the game into extra innings.

Game two..................

Larry Thomas (4-1) went 7.1 innings allowed nine hits and three earned run with one walk and five strikeouts for the win. Jim Coffman (2/3 inning) and Bernie Wertz got the final five outs with Wertz being awarded his 6th save.

Crowder hit a two run homerun (6th) and Elmer Griesinger a solo homerun (5th) for the Stingrays.

Game three Relief pitcher Bobby Manual (5-0) got the win in relief of Juan Escobar who lasted 6.1 innings (6 hits 3R/3ER 3 BB 5 SO) and Pat Heep went 1.2 perfect innings to finish it for Florida.

Heep, a 31 year old left hander acquired from Cleveland on August 7th, has lowered his inflated ERA from 6.91 with Cleveland to a combined 4.64 and 0.00 with Florida over seven appearances.

Maybe we will have a race yet?????
