Heinie Wagner League Baseball

Post by jacktoast »

place in the final standongs to 6th The New York Mets put the Heinie in the Heinie Wagner League the past two seasons. In 1950 they were 36-45 (.444)) finishing 7th, eleven games behind first place Montreal, and in 1951, they finished only slightly better at 39-52 (.481) climbing up just one place to sixth behind pennant winning Cincinnati.

From August 7, 1951 the New York brain trust made six trades that materially improved the Mets roster, garnering the club such players as starting pitcher Bob Grim (4-2 2.36) An All Star in 1950, Culp (3-2 3.51, relief pitcher Bobby Perry 1-0 3.27, relief pitcher Marcel Settmire (0-1 2.54), starting center fielder Klondike LaRose, a two time All Star, Bob Neagle, a veteran second baseman currently hitting .333.

The trades gave the Mets the best pitching talent on paper in the league and they have responded with appropriate results in pitching statistics, send in ERA, earned runs, strikeouts, hits and third in WHIP all with pitching ace, the former Cy Young Award winner and two time All Star, Jimmy Bracken off to a slow start, 3-3 3.34.

The Mets took two of three from Brooklyn, in Brooklyn, and began a six game home stand with a 6-2 victory over high flying first place Montreal.

National League strikeout leader Bob Grim stifled Montreal on two hits striking out eleven over nine innings.

Grim gave up a triple to lead off batter Jeff Benton who scored on a infield out. Grim then set down the next nineteen consecutive batters before issuing two one out walks in the seventh. A eight inning error put Mickey Phillips on base and two walks then loaded the bases. A single by Jeff Brenton scored one run before the determined Grim escaped the inning.

Two stikeouts in the ninth allowed Grim to finish strong after the two previous lack luster innings.

New York scored a run in the first inning when super utility man Jolbert Meche, playing third base in this game, singled and scored on a triple by LaRose.

Meche, a Gold Glove catcher, is hitting .415 and has played six positions this season; only three at his best position, catcher, four at first base due to injuries, five at second, four at third, three in left field, one in center, and has pinch hit three times. The versatile French-Canadian from Lafayette, Louisiana, has been the erstwhile MVP for the team.

The next New yirk scores iced the ganme and came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Meche doubed with one out, LaRose and shortstop Scott Monroe drew walks from losing pitcher Fred Mott. Martin Lopez bleast his second homerun (first grand slam) to make the score 5-0 and with Grim firmly in command cruised to the win.
