Baltimore 11 Detroit 2

Detroit received a poor effort from their best pitcher, Dan Hall, who surrendered six runs (five earned) on eight hits over just five and a third innings. Hall's record dropped to 7-6.

Three relieves, Jeff Pool, Dave Thorpe, and Jason Davis gave up five more runs on six hits.

Baltimore right fielder Maurice Hamm drilled two homeruns to give him fourteen for the season (T/2nd in AL with teammate Joe Deans and New York's Jeff Brandenburg). Hamm hit a two run shot off Hall in the fourth and a three run blast in the sixth inning, off Dave Thorpe, giving him five RBI in the game.

Hal Wine threw his second complete game of the season allowing just two runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out seven. Wine improved his record to 4-3.

Tigers catcher Larry Ehmke hit his fifth of the season leading off the fifth inning.

GAME TWO

Detroit evened the series with a 5-2 victory behind right hander Robinson Smith, now 2-7 with a 3.30 ERA.
smith, who has been the victim of 7 unearned runs this season went eight innings, allowed six hits and two runs walked six and struck out six.

Smith commented after the game; I was pleased with my overall effort but the one thing I must cut down on is the walks.''

Closer Jason Davis picked up his eighteenth save with a scoreless ninth inning.

It was the home team that scored first in this one. Baltimore put a run on the board in the bottom of the second inning on Walt Wimberly's ninth homerun.

Detroit came back to tie the game in top of the third inning. Catcher Jerry Witherup singled past a diving second baseman, Joe Deans, stole second base. Smith advanced the catcher to third base with a bunt, where he scored on a infield ground out by shortstop Seth Turbeville.

Detroit added on to their lead in the fourth inning. Alex Mota singled and stole second base (6th). Mota scored on a two base throwing error on Baltimore shortstop Ricky Tucker.

Two solo homeruns in the top of the sixth for Detroit made it 4-1. Tigers third baseman Dan Blum slugged his tenthof the year and newly acquired Jimmy Prescott hit his first as a Tiger, third of the season.

Baltimore got one run back in the bottom of the seventh when Joey Hernandez led off the inning with a triple and scored one out later on a ground out to Turbeville.

Pinch hitter Mike Decker homered in the top of the ninth to make the final score 5-2.
