Heinie Wagner NL League Pennant Race

Post by jacktoast »

The Mets have a long ways to go and a short time to get there if they want to be any factor in the National League Pennant race. The Mets currently languish in the NL cellar with a 16-24 record eight games back.

The Mets do have the longest active winning streak (five) one more than first place Cincinnati's four straight. This after the Mets handed the struggling San Francisco Giants their seventh straight loss with a 3-2 walk-off win in game one of a three game series at Casey Stengal Memorial Stadium.

The Mets got off to an early 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning off Giants starting pitcher Jeff Buzhardt. Buzhardt walked Jim Lonergan with one out to start the rally. Lonergan stole second base, his 5th stolen base of the season putting himself to score easily on Johnny McCabe's triple to deep right field. Mike Sanford popped out to shortstop Damingo Hageman for the second out of the inning. Scott Monroe came through with a clutch two out two strike single to drive in McCabe.

3-0 Mets.

The Giants tied the game in the top of the 7th inning.

Mets starter Neil Livingstone gave up a lead off single to Hageman who stole second base. Livingstone walked Bobby Altenburg and pinch hitter Elmer Robinson. Rick Jones two out single drove in Hageman and Alterberg to tie the game.

Livingstone stranded Robinson and Jones by retiring Lou Krieschnich on a come-backer to the mound.

Livingstone left the game with one out in the 9th after Cap Bemis singled to center field. Ray Arftsteiger got the final tow outs of that inning anfd got the win (1-0) when the Mets got to Joe Pellingrini in the bottom of the 9th.

Klondike LaRose singled with one out. Pelligrini walked John Smith and McCabe picked up his second hit and the game winning RBI with a line drive single to left field.

Cincinnati took care of business with a 8-3 win over Brooklyn. The LA Kings downed Montreal 7-2 and Pittsburgh's Buddy Warmoth shutout Houston 6-0 on four hits with posting strikeouts.
