Mets send Giants downto eighth straight loss

The Mets and Giants are two clubs headed to two drastically different directions. Eight games ago the Giants were in first place and the Mets were 11-22 mired in eighth place. Since then the wheels have come off for the Giants and the Mets have been revived by a pair of trades with the Detroit Ducks.

The Mets acquired catcher Mike Sanford, a Gold Glove winner in 1950, and a NL All Star, has hit .250 with one homerun and one RBI since coming to New York. Two more players came over from Detroit in a second trade.

Center fielder Klondike LaRose, the Canadian Flash, and right handed starting pitcher Bob Grim also joined the Mets. Both have gotten off to hot starts with their new team. Grim, who was a second round pick for Pittsburgh, in 1950, was 4-3 with the Ducks has been 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA in two starts for New York, LaRose, also an All Star, has hit .333 with five runs batted in for New York.

Grim made his second start for the Mets against the Giants and he went eight shutout innings allowing five hits, three walks, and recorded nine strikeouts before giving way to right hander George Escarrega who completed the shutout with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Mets scored two unearned runs off Giants starter Ed Bannister in the bottom of the 3rd inning to take a 2-0 lead. Ken McMahon reached on a two-base throwing error by Giants third baseman Charlie Hudlin to start the inning.McMahon stole second base and scored on aone out single by Klondike LaRose.

The Mets pecked away for a second run in the inningMike Sanford singled sending LaRose to third base. Bannister walked Scott Monroe to load the bases and then gave a free pass to Martinb Lopez to force home LaRose with the second run.

New York added two late insurance runs the first off releaver George Hermann in the 7th. Bill Garber hit a solo homerun (5th) off Hermann with onbe out to make it 3-0 and pinch hitter Fred Underwood hit a pinch hit solo homer off (his 3rd) Joe Pellegini in the 8th.

Grim, the winner 6-3...Bannister the loser 3-4.

Brooklyn 5 Cincinnati Hammers 3

Fourth place Brooklyn evened their three game series with first place Cincinnati with a 5-3 by jumping on the Hammers with a four run first inning sending nine batters to the plate collecting six hits and an error thrown in helped their casuse as well.

Frank Peters hit the first of two triples in the game driving in two runs, one run scored on the error by third baseman Billy Reis/ Brooklyn lost one man (Atcher, who reached on the error) at the plate on a throw by center fielde Tom Burgmeier. Joe Higgons who singled on that play scored on a single by Joe Melder

Peters hit another triple in the 2nd inning driving in the fifth run for Brooklyn.

Lee Moss made the early runs stand up for his first win (1-2).
