Mets sweep Pirates

The celler dwelling New York Mets have been swept three times this season and the took pleasure in returning the favor to Pittsburgh, one of the three teams who pulled off sweep against them this season, by pulling off their second sweep of the season at Casey Stengel Memorial Stadium.

The Mets took game one 4-1 with Neil Livingston (3-7) going seven and two thirds innings allowing severn hits and one run with two bases on ball and a season high ten strikeouts.

Two members of an improvng bullpen, Ron Welchonce got the last out of the eight inning and George Escarrega took care of the ninth for his third save.

The Mets scored two runs in the first inning on a RBI single byMickey Hall and the first of Met three sacrifice flies in the game.

Martin Lopez lofted the second in the sixth inning to up the lead to 3-0 and the starting pitcher Neil Livingstone hit the third one in the seventh to plate the Mets fourth run in Johnny McCabe who tripled leading off.

Pittsburgh broke up the shutout in the ninth.

Mets 4 Pirates 2

The second game was much the same type of game as game one; a low scroing well played struggle. The Mets fifth starter, Grant Murphy, pitched one of his best games this season to get his first win this season (1-2). Murphy logged six innings gave up two runs on seven hitd struck out five and walked four.

Once again the Mets bullpen held up snicely with Ray Arststeiger going two scoreless innings and George Escarrega tossing a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save.

Pittsburgh scored a run on two hits off Murphy in the visitors half of the second inning. Bill Crider doubled with two outs and Kid Hutchinson drove him in with a single.

The Mets came back immediately scoring two in the the same inning. Pittsburgh starter Vic White started things off by walking Bill Garber, the lead off batter. Catcher Jolbert Meche singled to left field sending Garber to second. White retired the next two Mets on the infield with no movement by the runners but reserve infielder Mark Popovich signaled his manager that he wanted more playing time by lineing a clean single to right center field scporing both runners.

Popovich drove in two more innings in the bottom of the 5th when he belted his first homerun of the season with one on putting the Mets in front by a score of 4-1. Pittsburgh picked up anbother run late in the game but the Mets set themselves up to get a sweep by holdoing on for 4-2 win.

Buddy Warmoth took the loss falling to 3-5.

Game three......
Mets 3 Pittsburgh 2

Pittsburgh took another early lead in game three with two runs in the fourth inning off the Mets best starter, Bob Grim (6-3 2.33 ERA). Grim walked Bob Heffenr wheo scored on a ringing double off the left field wall by Snuffy Samford. Reid Royster drove in Samford wih a single.

2-0 Pitates.

Johnny McCabe's fourth homerun of the season in the sixth inning off Ben Henderson cut that lead in half. (2-1)

Ron Welchonce pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th inning by getting Marty Begley to hit into a force out at home and striking out Crider to end the inning.

Dario Wilkinson took the mound for Pittsburgh in the ninth and Mike Stanford greeted im with his second four bagger this season. Bill Garber singled with one outs Pinch hitter Fred Eastewood dropped a soft single into left fieldd moving Garbwr to second. Garber stole third base and scored the winning run on the Mets fourrth sacrifice fly in the last two games, this one off the bat of Wayne Ellison.


Grim went seven innings was charged with two runs on seven hits walked an uncharacteristic five batters while fanning only one. Welchonce (2-1) got the win.

The first place Cincinnati Hammer are now 32-19 after taking two of three from second place Montreal. The Hammers took the rubber game 10-7 banging out sixteen hits behind Al Redfied who needed two out relief help in the ninth from Jimmy Martin to finish off the Expos.

Cincinnati had three doubles by Tom Burgmeier (5), Chick Griner (9) and Larry Mack (12) and one homerun from Billy Wertz, his third.

LA Kings pounded Brooklyn 9-3 and San Francisco defeated Houston 6-2.

The Mets next take on Montreal and are currently two games behind Pittsburgh and Houston.

The Mets modest three game wining streak is the longest winning streak going and Pittsburgh's six game drought in the longest losing streak.
