Lowly Mets rolling with four game winning streak

Mets 5 Montreal 4 (in 16 Innings)

It took sixteen innings to do it but the New York Mets extended their winning ways to four straight games with a 5-4 win over Montreal.

New York scored five runs on fourteen hits in the game evening their record in extra innings at 4-4. The Mets have socred sixteen runs and allowed nine in those games. Pitching has been the biggest reason for the turn around. The bullpen and the starters have each won two games and posted a 1.02 ERA allowing nine runs in 42.2 innings. (Starters; 1.92 and bullpen 0.63).

Randy Kofloski, the fourth Mets pitcher used in the game picked up the win (3-2) going the final five innings giving up just two hits.

Montreal used seven pitchers with Stephens taking the loss (4-2).

Both teams scored in the first inning. New York scored one when Jim Lonergan, new comer Franki Gonzalez, and hot hitting Mark Gonzalez bunched together three singles.

Eddie Wasdin tied the game in the bottom of the first with his 3rd and the 7th given up by Clinton this season coming with two outs.

New York took a 3-1 lead in the fourth when Montreal starter issed three free passes to Mike Sanford, Mickey Hall and Scott Monroe followed by a two out - two run scoring single by Martin Lopez.

Bill Garber increased the lead to 4-1 with the fist of two for him, his seventh.

Clinton began to unravel in the eighth when Knetzer singled and Bob scored him with a two run homer (8th off Clinton, 7th for Ferry.)

Alan Yastrzemski tied the game with a home run off George Escarrega in the ninth. (3rd off Escarrega).

Both teams put up zeros for the next six innings before the Mets broke through in the 16th inning. Garber hit his second of the game to plate the go-ahead run off losing pitcher Gary Stephens.

Other games;

Brooklyn 7 Houston 4

Les Moss (3-2) got the win for Brooklyn.

Brooklyn sewed it up sending ten men to the plate in the third inning collecting four hits and getting addition help in the form of two walks and a hit batter from Houston starter Jackie Moore.

Carlisle Heredia had a two run single, Jack Kerr a two run double and Dale Ackley a run scoring single in the big inning.

Nick Reidle picked up his 12th save.

Cincinnati 9 Pirates 6

The Pirates continue to struggle and the Hammers continue to win. Cincinnati put up nine runs on twelve hits scoring six times in the fourth inning to over come a 3-0 lead by Pittsburgh and take a 6-3 advantage in route to a 9-3 walk over.

LA Kings 3 SFG 0

Buzz Waters won his third straight game with eight scoreless inning (four hits) and a scoreless inning of relief help from Vic Barnes (13th save).

Edwardo Quintana (6th) and Vince Johnson (2nd) went back to back in the fifth inning and Jon=hnson tripled and scored on Bert Smith sac fly in the seventh.

Bill Schurr (2-3) took the loss.
