September Looms as the Teams Tighten Things Up

Post by jacktoast »

Pirates 3 Cincinnati 0

The Pirates took two of three from first place Cincinnati by shutting out the front runners 3-0.

The heavy work was done by Buddy Warmoth who went 7.2 innings holding Cincinnati to just two hits after eight game winner John Hartley and two relievers held them to five hits in a 3-1 victory in game two.

Bob Heffner hit a two run home run for the winners in the fourth inning and Marty Begley scored from third base on a passed ball on catcher Virgil Glenn late in the game.

The Hammer loss did not help the two closest clubs to the leaders as they both lost.Brooklyn was shut out by Renie Hunter and Lena McRae on four hits.

Montreal has now lost four straight after being swept at home by the hottest team in the league, the New York Mets.

The Mets destroyed Montreal 14-2 in game two. In the finale Mets starting pitcher Neil Livingston continued to rebound from a lackluster and frustrating start with his third straight win.

The Mets did not have the same firepower in this one but still won 3-2.

Livingstone gave them eight solid innings giving up two runs on nine hits one walk and recording two strikeouts. Sinkerballer specialist George Escarrego worked a scoreless ninth for his 5th save.

First baseman Billy Garber has been AWOL most of the season hitting less than .200. In the last couple of weeks Garber, Jim Lonergan, Mike Stanford have all gotten hot.

Garber launched his 9th home run of the season with a man on in the 4th inning,

The Mets added a big insurance run in the 5th inning. Frankie Gonzalez singled to right field, stole second and scored one out later on a single by catcher Jolbert Meche.

Montreal made it interesting in the late innings. Steve Brown had a RBI single in the seventh. Scoring was Joe Gee who tripled. Eddie Wasdin singled in Sarge Knetzer one inning later for Montreal's last run.

The Mets return home to face the heavy hitting Houston Gunslingers who will have a tough customer right hander Jack Morrow 5-3 2.55 on the mound opposing Mets right hander Bob Grim.

Should be a good one.
