Shutouts were the order of the day in the National League as all four winning teams won via a shutout.

Hammers 6 Los Angeles 0

Cincinnati (34-21) leads the NL by a comfortable six games and kept it that way with a 6-0 white washing of Los Angeles. Al Redfield (6-3) threw a complete game four hit shutout in this one. Redfield, a 1950 All Star reserve with a 10-4 record, lowered his ERA to 4.62 in 89.2 innngs walked three and struck out seven.

The NL RBI leader Tom Burgmeier (45) hit his 10th homerun (3rd in NL) with two on in the 3rd inning to stake Cincinnati to a 4-0 lead over losing pitcher Damion Thorne (5-6). Burgmeier also singled and scored on Chet Dapper's double in the 7th inning off Tony Trombley.

Montreal 5 Brooklyn 0

Santo Houtteman (5-2) went 7.2 innings and with help from Gary Stephens in the eighth and Vida Stange in the ninth got credit for a combined shutout.

Montreal had a total of five runs on 11 hits began their scoring in the 2nd inning with a sacrifice fly by Joe Gee that scored Sarge Knetzer. Gee doubled in Montreal second run in the 4th inning and scored another run on an infield single by Houtteman the pitcher.

Pittsburgh 13 SF Giants 0

Ben Henderson got 13 runs of support and he gave his bullpen the day odd with a CG effort holding San Francisco to just four hits. Henderson walked six and fanned six.

Kid Hutcherson hit a grand slam homerun in the 9th inning to complete the rout.Eric Trent hit a two run shot in the 2nd inning and Henderson dorve in a run and went one for five at he plate.

When a starting pitcher gets five at bats in a game good things have usually happened for his team.

Mets 3 Houston 0

The Mets continue to win (seven straight...eight of ten) and have begun to move slowly up the standings with one month to go.

The pitching staff has done a tremendous effort in the winning streak. The Mets scored fourteen rns in one game but other than that four runs has been their high (twice). The pitching staff has allowed just 13 runs in 69 innings over than span.

The Mets are now tied with San Francisco for 7th place, and one game behind a trio of clubs (Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Brooklyn) at 27-28 in third place.

Bob Grim started for the Mets and did not allow a baserunner until he walked Elmer Ames leading off the 3rd inning. Grim walked two batters in his eight innings of work. Derek McCredie also walked leading off the 3rd, but both were eraced in double plays.

Grim did not allow a hit until the pitcheer, Jack Marrow, singled with two outs in the 6th inning. The Gunslingers only other hit was a one-out infield single by Bill Allen with one out in the eight inning.

Grim took exception to Marrow hitting him with a pitch in the 5th inning, Marrow also said something to Grim from first base after his single but catcher Mike Sanford was on the spot to settle his pitcher down and nothing came of it.

George Escarrega took over in the 9th to pick upo his 6th save out of the bullpen.

The Mets scored their first run in the 2nd inning when Bill Garnersingled, Marrow uncorked a wild pitch as Martin Lopez went fishing for it. Lopez popped out on the next pitchScott Monroew, the next batter singled in Garber. Mark Popovich hit into a double play to end that threat.

In the very next inning the Mets were right back at it scoring two runs on a walk to Jim Lonergan, a RBI double by Klondike LaRose and RBI single by Stanford.

Marrow (5-4) took the loss walking three in his eight innings gave up all three Mets runs on six hits and one wild pitch..
