THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD...Mets win 9th straight

Mets 3 Houston 2

The Mets have won nine straight, 9 out of their last 10 and now atre just six games out of first place with a 28-29 record. Most importantly the team is getting excellant pitching and has hopes of more scoring since a couple of reulars have started to hit.

Winning pitcher Jimmy Bracken went eight innings allowed four hits and two earned runs walked three and struck out eight and is now 5-3 with a 3.25 ERA.

Houston scored its first trun in the 4th inning when Bracken struck out the first batter, then walked S. H. Christman before getting out number two with another strikeout of McCredie. Jack Hemond singled to left field sending Christman to third base. Bill Allen singled past second baseman Mark popovich scoring Christman.

The Mets struck in the bottom of the 5th. Mickey Hall singled to center field. Scott Monroe singled to center field and Popovich doubled to left fielddriving in two runs 2-1 Mets.

Terry Remmerswall thriple with no outs. Christman's ground out to Popovich at second brought the tying run home. 2-2.

Klonedike LaRose walked and stole second base and third base. Stanford walked but was caught stealing. LaRose scored on a ground out by Lopez. 3-2 Mets.

And that was the final.

Montreal won its third straight with a 8-5 victory over Brooklyn.

Los Angeles downed first place Cincinnati 5-3. Cincinnati's lead shrunk to four games over Montreal and five over the LA Kings.

The Mets have won nine straight wins are now tied with Pittsburgh 6 games behind.
