San Francisco 13 St Louis 7

Second place San Francisco (5-2) outslugged the 3-4 St Louis Perfectos 13-7 collecting fifteen hits in the game.

Germany Powell reached base four times and scored four runs for San Francisco. Powell was hit by a pitch and scored on Steve Bender's three run homerun in the third when San Francisco took a 4-1 lead. Howell homered in the fifth inning, had a run scoring triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dolly Tilson in the seventh and walked and scored on a two run single by Charlie Emmer in the eighth.

Bud Salisbury hit a homerun for San Francisco in the ninth to cap off the scoring for the Giants.

Razor Mickelson (2-0 4.50 ERA) went the nine innings for the Giants giving up seven runs on ten hits . Mickelson pitching with a big lead allowed seven runs on ten hits walked six and stuck out five pitching his second consecutive complete game.

Curt Flood, Ray Jablonsky and Don Blasingame hit homeruns off Mickelson who has now surrendered five homeruns in eighteen innings pitched.

St. Louis starting pitcher Vinegar Bend Mizell lasted only four innings ( five hits five runs) forcing St Louis to go deep into its bullpen. The Perfectos used Dean Stone for two innings (two runs on four hits), Jim Brosnan (one inning), Marshall Bridges (one inning six runs on six hits) and Bob Miller (one inning).

San Francisco will start right hander Gary Blaylock against Scott Adams in game two of the series. St Louis will need Adams to go deep into this game.

San Diego 7 Brooklyn 2

San Diego (4-3) sent hapless Brooklyn (1-6) down to its third straight loss.

Right hander Matt Strahm (2-0 1.62 ERA) signed a contract earlier in the day for a hefty pay raise that was not specified. Bouyed by the cash in the banlk Strahm pitched a complete game holding Brooklyn to two runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

A hree run six inning did in Brooklyn starter Art Matchick (0-2). Eric Hosmer drove in two runs with a double and Austin Hedges had a run scoring single in the inning.

A pair of two run homeruns off the bats of Freddy Galvis and Big Hurt Denbone padded the lead in the seventh.

Andy Gumpert hit a solo homerun for Brooklyn in the seventh, the first yielded by Strahm this season.

Grizzlies 5 Philadelphia 3

Colorado improved to 3-1 on the road with a hard fought 5-3 win in Philadelphia.

Matt Garner put the Grizzlies on the scoreboard in the second inning with a moon shot off Wilfredo Hoch (7.1 IP 5H 3R/3ER 3BB/6SO).

1-0 Colorado

The Pioneers tied the game in the second inning with the help of a two base throwing error on shortstop Paul McGhee. Pete French doubled and scored on the error by McGhee on a ground ball hit by the pitcher, Hoch.

1-1.

French was involved again in the fourth inning when he singled off Jeoff Stewart (6IP 6H 3R.2ER 1BB/8SO), stole second base and scored on a clutch single by Luther Gomez.

2-1 Philadelphia.

Philadelphia went up 3-1 in the fifth inning. Donte Dobbs hit his first of the season to deep right field with two outs and no one on off Stewart (3rd off Stewart in 14 innings pitched).

Colorado inched closer in the sixth with a run off Hich thanks in part thanks to two walks issued by the right hander. Lead off batter Gil Mota singled and stole second. Hoch walked Bill Mackinson and then after striking out McGhee, walked Harlin Donlin to load the bases with one out. The Grizzlies got only one run out of it. Mota scored on a sacrifice fly by Carlton Moore to cut the lead to one; 3-2.

Colorado got rid of Hoch in the eighth inning. Mackinson doubled with one out bringing in Mike Herbal.

Herbal faced just three batters and allowed hits to all three. McGhee's single just inched by diving second baseman Dante Dobbs scoring Mackinson ad tying the game.

McGhee stole second base and scored the go-ahead run on a single to right field by Carlton Moore.

Herbal left then, replaced by Lynn Chiles, who restored order with no further scoring.

Rotsen Ellaf Jr. who took over in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings got the win (1-0).

Casey Hayworh picked up his league best sixth save with a scoreless ninth inning.
