COLORADO 3 SAN DIEGO 2

Colorado took game two of their seires with San Diego by defeating a very good starting pitcher, Randy Jones.

Jones surrendered a solo homerun to red hot hiotting Paul McGhee with twop outs in the first inning. It was McGhee's third of the season, third in the last four games and extended a hitting streak to six games in which he has gone 9 for 19 (.474) with three homers, 6 runs scoered, 7 runs batted in and two stolen bases.

Center fielder Bill Mackinson made it 2-0 in the 4th with a solo shot off Jones, the second of the game off him and seventh allowed this season. Moore followed with a triple, but Jones stranded him at third getting Donlin on a called third strike and Garrett to ground out to shortstop Freddy Galvis.

Colorado starting pitcher Eric Hooper was exceptional over the first four innings allowing only a one out single to Tony Gwynn in the 2nd that was wiped out by an inning ending double by started by Hooper (1-6-3) off the bat of Corey Spangenberg. Mark Kotsay had a two out single in the 4th by was stranded when Eric Hosmer became Hooper's first strikeout victim.

Hopper ran into a peck of trouble in the 5th, not all of it of his own making. Gwynn reached on an error on first baseman Anthony Fox. Spangenberg singled sending Gwynn scampering around to third. Spangenberg was thrown out stealing by Colorado catcher Jim Garrett. (2-6.. One out)

Austin Hedges tied the game with his second homerun of the season, the 4th hit off Hooper.

The inning was not over. Jankowski reached on a two base error in right field by Carlton Moore. Hopper walked Freddy Galvis putting two on with two outs then struck out Carlos Asugie to end it after seven batters, two hits, one homerun, one base on balls one strikeout, one caught stealing, two errors and two left on base.

Jones retired Colorado in order in quick fashion in the bottom of the inning and Hopper was quickly back in the soup in the 6th. Hooper walked Gwynn (who else) with one out. Spangenberg singled to center, sending Gwynn around to third again.

That left Hooper had nothing with nothing in the tank and right hander George Gieger made his 16th appearance of the season (6.61) ERA.

Geiger retired Travis Jankowski on a fly ball to right fielder Carlton Moore.

McGhee had a two out single in the 6th but was left standing at second.

Gieger worked two more scoreless innings retiring seven straight batters, easily his best performance of the season before turning things over to Derek Walker in the 9th.

Walker allowed a single to hedges with one out but escaped by striking out Jankowski and a great catch in center field by Mackinson.

As it says in baseball lore, make a great play and lead off the next inning. Mackinson did..but he struck out. That would be Jones' last strikeout for he walked the next batter McGhee. It was Jones' only walk of the ball game and it cost him the win. McGhee stole second base.

Jones ( LP 2-2 8.1IP 5H 3ER 1BB 8SO) was replaced by twenty three year old right hander Adam Simber (9th appearance 5.19 ERA).

The stolen base set up McGhee to score the winning run on a single by Carlton Moore, atoning for his error in a big way.

Miller the winning pitcher; 2-1

WALK OFF win for Colorado 3-2.
